Good day all,

I actually see things in reverse, I feel like there should be an increased chance to find something worthwhile, not an increased chance to find something worse off.

You spend 12 hours with a fleet (5 ships and officers), looking for something that may not be there. Your loosing out on (x) fleet trade during that time. I actually feel there should be a chance to receive an upgraded ship based on your efforts. It could be:

Fleet set to salvage for 12 hours:
IF ships are lost in that port, and IF you find one:
- 90% chance to find normal ship lost
If this ship is found 30% chance to find "Captains Treasure Chest found" with gold (size of chest depends on ship type)
- 4% Chance to find a ship "upgrade" when raising. Will be 1 level higher in that ships class. "Calipso blesses the ship that was one with the sea"
- 4% Chance to find the 1 coin ship or "Your efforts were for not, the sea claims this ship for Davey Jones" Ship lost forever.
- 1% chance to find a ship Upgrade to "powerful ship". Will be top ship in that class
- 1% Chance to reassign trait "The sea has washed away past memories, a new coarse awaits"

Some may not like this idea, but i think the possible rewards should be near equal to the effort.
Remember...

There is a use for the 'worthless' but seaworthy ship.

Agreed. In some cases a ship with no traits may be a better form of protection against raid than most others.

Except no-one knows its traitless unless.. they raid and capture it.
So, not so much a defence as a booby-prize...

If there is a chance a trait can be lost,
There should be a chance a trait can be gained.
However there should not be a good enough chance a trait is gained that everyone starts sinking their own ships with hope of increasing their traits.

Player A had a 2 trait frigate.
It is sunk in battle.
Player B recovers the frigate.

Example

The frigate may either have the same 2 traits
1 trait or 3 traits.

Function

For all non Man of War ships

You could now go +1,0, or -1 for traits in a sinking.
Until the ship has 3 traits or 0 traits.

In the rare event a Man of War is sunk. It can
Go +1,0,or -1 for traits up to 4 traits and down to 1trait as it cannot lose the leviathan protection trait.

Suggested potential ratios

25% chance of +1trait
50% chance of no change.
25% chance of -1 trait

If we went with this, I think that the chance to gain should be low with the chance to lose only slightly more something like:

10% +1
75% No Change
15% -1
