I have had fun with this war. I will continue to have fun with this war. But once again it points out how bad the game mechanics surrounding port control needs to change.

yeah of course the port war needs to change, putting ships in the middle of the battle to take or retake the port. but even the battle system should be changed ! because at that point if the battle will be 5 ships VS 5 ships, ships of the line belonging to veterans will beat little newbies fleets and it will be useless to be in a nation of newborns, although active, if they have no chance.

but i read nice ideas like the fort (or coastal defenses).
We could add even the idea of max ships in a port in defense and higher cap for attackers (cause defenders could have port). A siege at the end.
But overall i would like to see a new battle system, not the 5 vs 5 as now cause at the end i can afford 100 sloops level 10 but they have no impact on ships of the line level 10. but it should be different, meaning that people can concentrate their force in one place and being able to outnumber a stronger enemy and to beat him.

Technically this is possible now, 10 fleets of decent level 10 sloops would eventually beat a SOTL fleet, though you'd probably run out of turns before knocking them over.
Crap SOTL are really not not worth much, anything under 50 points is mostly bait, it isn't the ship level but the ship attributes that count.

The scenario you paint is hardly limited to PG, a kid rocking up in a gocart with fire stripes is going to get lapped by a NASCAR, you do the time you get the rides, or in our case , ships.
Some people are like Slinkies, totally useless but great fun to watch when you push them down the stairs

Dont over-worry about being out-gunned by sotl fleets. There are ways and means to reduce their power and increase yours relative to them. Proper stacking of attributes can add a serious advantage over a poorly stacked fleet. Bless and Drums add more kick to your donkeys too. I've captured a SotL10 using a merchantman. It can be done. Learn the voodoo cards. Fireship for one is a great card in those circumstances. Call the Kraken another.Plan your assault to weaken the enemy first, then launch your ships at them. As victorious fleets do not auto-repair damage a series of failed assaults will weaken them too. No fleet is immune to capture. Just learn how to go about it and use your imagination and the tools available to us all.

I wonder if this war is going to end. Wondering if Spain will be victorious with IoM dumping a couple hundred mil each night into Goroum.

Then I look at the demographics board and I laugh and laugh.... :D :D

It's the economy, stupid!

A long-drawn out war is a marvelous gold-sinker. CJ will be pleased.

Yepper... CJ will be very pleased I am sure. Too much gold in game was a major worry for him.

Now, if wars were fought with ships instead of gold, there would not be what he perceives as a surplus.
Currently the way wars are fought, I would say the Spanish Treasury was touch light to take part in a summer long war.

All joking aside for a minute, CJ, seriously, the reason there is such a gold surplus is because it is the main weapon in a war.
If this were not the case, gold stocks would be much lower I would think.

I know from the day Spain finishes its current war, it plans for the next one by building a huge reserve of gold stocks.

This is a major contributor to the overall wealth in Avonmora however it remains out of circulation until such a time it is needed.
I would be confident in saying it skews the stat somewhat in the big picture.

Curious, has there been a war bigger then this in terms of all resources? Gold, Voodoo, Ships, etc??

I don't have the age and wisdom as some here. Truly would like to know.

I think the current port control mechanics cause much of this gold surplus to be hanging around in treasuries and banks. It encourages profit-intensive play to finance port ambitions and defence. I do notice that since hanging up my port nonsense boots I need worry less about my bank balances and worrying about earning the gold to maintain them. As a consequence I am back to enjoying the game. Enough trading fleets to fund my more modest current ambitions. A handy hit fleet to gather plunder as a bonus and I can dabble in aspects of the game without the all-encompassing demand to earn more gold to keep the influence pile high.
I would recommend it as an approach to the game, at least until ports and nations involve a bit more than throwing massive amounts of coin into a deep pit then adding more daily.
