Agnar shrugs

We got me, secure win. Joke aside. My crew think we're completely superior. But I always follow one rule. If you're not nervous before a battle, you've already lost. If you're nervous, your senses are on their peak.

a chuckle is heard as Vune comes and sits down

The opposite is a rule for mages. If a mage is nervous about an experiment or a spell, they risk mispronouncing the spell, or fumbling an ingredient. Calmness, patience, and steady hands are pretty essential for mages. Even when we go to battle, a good mage must remain calm and collected. Being nervous or even worse panicked can result in horrid accidents. I can't even count how many apprentices I have had who blew themselves up. Always a big bloody mess to clean.

Agnar nods

Same goes for me when I use my sword's runes. However, they're locked right now, sadly. But in a swordfight, I go to a fight nervous, but once the battle starts, it rides off, and I finish the target with confidence. Sometimes in one strike, sometimes in 10. Depending on his skill or his adrenaline level.

If I remember correctly, the Cunning linguist had a decent sized crew, so it wasn't just you and Ellen.

Brian nods to Jack

When we first started out, it was just me and Ellen, no one else-well save for Emily from time to time. Then eventually we did get some old friends from Panselo to join as well-but we never had more then 10 people at a time I don't think. However we always tried to make sure people only assumed 2 people were on the ship. The others often stayed hidden, only coming out during battles. And since no one would want to admit they lost such an embarrassing battle, that trick worked quite a lot. It's always good to have something up your sleeve, and Ellen always tried to have a surprise or 2 for any enemies.

How many guns did she carry?

Brian thinks

Well depends really. If we knew we were going into a fight ahead of time, we would carry extra, and sometimes put on heavier then usual cannons, but since we normally tried to be peaceful, we normally only carried 4. But we rarely actually fought with our cannons, we normally tried to trick our attackers into boarding us, as both me and Ellen were very good melee fighters, then our hidden crew mates would jump out and ambush them. Sometimes we would surrender immediately, only to lure them into an ambush on our ship. If our enemy however wanted to fight cannon vs cannon, we would normally run, as a cutter isn't the best choice for a ship battle, but as fast as they are, larger ships can rarely catch us. As I said before-me and Ellen were not fools-we knew if a battle was clearly too large for us to win, and neither of us were too proud to run away.

Not all of them are bad for combat. My best sloop carried 14 four pounders and 75 men, and I've seen naval cutters with the same number of guns and similar number of men on board.

Brian nods

I mean comparatively. A fine sloop like that would be good for fighting similar sized ships, or ones a tad bigger. But such a ship would never be able to beat proper war ships of frigate sized or bigger unless the large ship makes some great mistakes and the smaller ship is smart and clever. But as I said, me and Ellen tried to avoid fights, so our cutter was not a good battle vessel.

Jack chuckles

A sloop of that power could certainly beat a frigate of most sizes, provided a certain tactic is used.
