Try to squash the people?
Good leaders rely on compromise, they must appease the majority, and the minority to maintain their power.
Democracy gives the masses a way to rebel peacefully. Without bloodshed, like the communist revolutions, and the Tiananmen square massacre...

Aye, but don't burst my bubble. I'd like to think we have evolved a little further in 300 years. To compare life and civilization now to back then is not very apt. The invention of corporations had a major impact on life as we now know it.
The corporation- a mechanism spawned from capitalism where a small group of people are able to earn incredible amounts of money while pretending to work each day meanwhile dreaming of ways to further enhance their wealth by doing less.
Don't get me wrong- The corporation has enabled mankind to make strident advances in technology and development all the while kicking and screaming when the work day was shortened to 8 hours/day and 5 days a week. Thank goodness unions were another invention that helped combat the mindset of corporations and their capitalist ambitions.
