Pirate Owned Ports

Postby Donald Trump » Tue Aug 02, 2016 6:11 am

Pirate Owned Ports pretty much benefit no one. So instead of just saying that the port should give money to pirates (which it shouldn't), I have a different route.

Pirate owned Ports Benefits
1. Pirate's only gain 3 danger when a attacking a fleet in a pirate owned port.
2. Pirate's can not have their ship's commandeered if they docked in a pirate owned port.
3. Pirate's can skirmish in that port with only gaining 3 danger.

Possible Game Mechanics:
- Pirate Owned Ports have a gambling option in which you play a card match of Texas Hold' Em against other merchants/pirates (2% cut by the casino goes to more rum!)

+1 Discussion

pirate owned ports do benefit pirates, they get free cannons and recruitment, as well as recruitment not requiring influence. and I personally think that's enough.
not to mention with the danger reduction that would discourage any sensible trader from going to a pirate port, until it is taken by a nation. also with the increased buy price of rum and food, what happens if that port sells one of those 2? does it sell if for more?
+1 on the little gambling option though, but id like that available anywhere not just in some port.
-1 on the rest of it, although I suppose if this does get changed its unlikely a pirate owned port will happen anytime soon.

I like the gamble/game idea Chin. I was just thinking there should be something like this in this game. Besides gambling with the death poker card.

Not quite sold on the other items

I like the idea that a pirate's port would be very different from a nation's held port. I think that #1 is good, that #2 doesn't make sense (it would likely be more easy to steal someone's ship in a pirate's port than in a port held by a sovereign nation), and that #3 should be 3 danger to match #1. I like the idea about the gambling option (and maybe other nations can vote on if they would like to allow gambling in their ports). I think that the ideas about rum and food are good as well, though there are some kinks to work out, like Mel pointed out. If not that, then maybe the pirate "king" (highest influence in that port) would get .5% of the trade that is done there, which is added on as an additional fee for ships doing business in a pirate port.

Overall, good idea to have different "bonuses" for pirate ports, and some good ideas to start the conversation about what those should be.

I did the +2 rum and +1 food to attract trade. But only 3 danger to make it better for pirates. Trade there at your own risk. There are no pirate ports because there is little incentive. As well Meliva, those free cannons and crew are very little. A few bucks saved means nothing.

I try my best to NOT include influence in this or money (pirates don't share rum).

you didn't address my point on what will the rum and food bonus do to ports that sell those products? will it increase the cost to buy? that would make logical sense after all. not to mention, having no danger gain on skirmish attacks would be ridiculous. it would more or less kill the trading at that port. the +2 sale on rum and food wont matter much if your trade fleet gets skirmished repeatedly.
and if what you say about free cannons and crew for pirates regardless of ports is true, then the title page needs to edit itself to correct this.

Meliva, it still costs turns to skirmish. As well, Skirmishing isn't even that common.

And I edited it*

This could change very soon if you have been following the latest talks. Skirmish may not cost turns, but still raise in danger.
