Ship strength comparison stats

Postby Jim Hawkins » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:35 pm

In other games I have played eg ---or ---stats are available to compare units.
IE strength of ships.

If you spend 2.6m gold on a lv10 brigg of war you get a certain atttack defence strength.

If you spend the same 2.6m gold on a ship of the line you only get a lv3 ship but I have no Idea which is the best option as no stats are available.

More help in the form of spreadsheets would be nice please

I have worked out a table of hit points per level for all ships by attacking NPC fleets. I assume player ships have the same hit points (unless Pacifism is played, which seems to reduce NPC hit points a bit).

I haven't been able to work out what the exact effects of the ship upgrades on attack/defense capabilities (damage done by hits, accuracy of shooting, ability to avoid hits, ability to absorb damage) are, or even whether they are or are not very significant. The effects of cotton sail and double hammock upgrades on speed have been published in these forums, I don't know if the devs would be willing to do the same for the effects of upgrades on combat.

If they were willing, and my assumption about hit points is correct, it would be possible to work out a cost-effectiveness calculator as you suggest.

But since a ship's upgrades can vary per ship (and the possible variations are likely to increase I think when ship configuration is redesigned as Captain Jack has discussed elsewhere) I don't think a table as in other games is possible. These tend to have a fixed set of combat numbers per unit type with simple %age changes from research, so the eventual unit strengths can be calculated and compared easily. I believe the aim is to make ships that are more individually buildable for particular mission types etc.

I have edited out other game names. We want to keep these forums clean even from indirect advertising.

Every ship is different here due to upgrades. There are a wide range of different builds per ship, something that will become even more widespread with forthcoming updates. So there are not really any details to add besides perhaps the numbers for speed which are translated to language and hit points.

Details on what exactly each ship upgrade does for combat attack/defense and how combat is calculated would be helpful if you were prepared to release them, along the lines of the formulae given in your Ship Speed post.

Ship base speeds can be worked out easily by building a ship type and trying it out, and hit points deduced from NPC combat, but the effects of upgrades on combat attack/defense can't be worked out - at least, I can't think of a way. I've tried by looking at the results of NPC combat but there are too many unknown variables.

I have wanted the combat-related formulas ever since I knew what the enhancements do in general. I am sure that every otherwise informed player wants to be truly informed. There is a luck factor involved in some of the battle rolls which keeps you from getting down to the details. Due to the effect of luck, the exact method for calculation (luck not included) shouldn't have to be so guarded. It seems only fair that a player not have to trust, blindly, that his choice of ship enhancements was wise. There is no wisdom in making uneducated decisions. Captain Jack, please allow us to make properly educated decisions.

We intend to simplify the formulas in the near future. When this is done, we will share the details. Trust me, they are very complicated to be shared right now.

Just a little off-topic to applaud what it seems right in my eyes:
Xepshunall, you are an asset to this game. I am amazed with your ethics and sportmanship both in-game and off-game. You set an example for many to follow which is a true inspiration for me at least. Congratulations man ;)
