Season's One and Two stick pretty close to the books plot-wise : then as it goes along each season after that, it does seem to stray further and miss out or overly compress some plot-lines and/or characters altogether, which is a shame as some of them are ones which offer intriguing possibilities for the overall plot later on. (Not a spoiler, as the TV show omits them entirely, but a whole range of clues and hints about John Snows parenthood are lost, a red herring as it still isnt resolved by the end of Book 5, but they added to my enjoyment of the complexities of the world Martin creates) But given how TV/movies hack the living soul out of most stuff they 'adapt', GoT gets off only slightly damaged.
