I did suffer a connectivity issue as I tried to repair any damage, so I tried again, this time I noticed that the message said he had no cargo so I looted nothing, but still no ranks. Is this a clause I have missed? I admit I often only skim read longer posts. I tried again on a different fleet of the same player but the result was the same. Can anyone shed any light on this? Do I actually have to steal some cargo to gain the ranks? Or do skirmish attacks never count towards nation missions?

For some reason, while I specifically remember typing it, I cannot find the quote where this was explained. We have updated it to the game help file just now though:

-Skirmishes do not count for any mission unless they are specifically named.

In different wording, we are diversifying a skirmish from an attack. Even in news events, you will get the messaged skirmished instead of attacked. The reason behind this decision, is that skirmish would simplify all current missions if it was allowed to count like an attack in the mission engine.

Fair enough, I will find some wood, build a bridge, and get over it. Hopefully the fella I attacked will do the same.
Thanks

So I know the loot amount of skirmishes was carefully weighed and has been discussed. Personally I would like more plundered, but that's a given for a pirate.. But what about fame? I long ago learned to ignore that stat, but it is still disheartening to see it plummet rather then slowly rise. This of course is due to the attacks skirmishing fleets will inevitably receive after gaining danger. The more fame you have the worse it is, and that kinda removes skirmish as an option if you are trying to accumulate it.

Also, an idea to make skirmish slightly more viable without hurting the traders more: What if skirmish gave only 2-5 danger instead of 6? After all, it is a less hostile action than plundering.

Welcome back Hawk, nice to see you posting in the forums again.

Our immediate plan with skirmish points is to allow up to 20 more per day through Academy. There will be a technology/knowledge (not sure how we will name the category yet) where each level will award 1 skirmish point per day. At level 20 it will be 20 extra points per day. There is also a possibility to let these tech level beyond 20 at extravagant costs for those that want it. At this case it may even go higher.

The extra points will allow a Pirate to get a very good total amount without the victims losing too much as they will still maintain the 3 daily defends (plus the insurance). Insurance might allow up to haggle the amount of defends protection later.

Skirmish for traders is not a viable not only for potential fame loss but also for potential gold loss. Rnning with a hand of 8 millions means that a single attack will cost you at least 81k which is more that you will potentially make on 3 skirmishes (except if you catch a treasure fleet). This means that skirmishing should still be a good choice for traders if the trader is small. Really, it is only the advanced traders that do not have a high interest for skirmish. I believe we can live with this and avoid tweaking the game rules more.

That being said, we would welcome any suggestions you have at that front. The Pirate Wishlist was a good index of ideas and has been helpful.

Cool, thanks Jack. I meant I, and pirates running with a low hand may still want fame. And that is an incentive not to use the feature not just for traders, that was more so my point.
