What if there were a nation demographics and the map was shown with up to date flags on it, when new people make a determination.
Demogrphics:
1. Name of Nation on Map
2. Overview - Each king/new king can write or change a small summary of their nations philosophy and play style in x amount of words or less
3. Economy - high level economic overview with ship tax levels - low - medium - high
4. Nation focus - From kings as well - Port Economics (banks, gold, plantations), Trade, Battle, Piracy, Training. list all with a scale of 1-5 for kings to fill in in order of importance to that king.
5. Nation Diplomacy (nation play style)- Set by king - Pacifism - Neutrality - Aggressive - Pirates
6. World View of Nation - Pacifistic - Neutral - Aggressive - Dirty Scalawags - Everyone gets to cast one vote on how they see that nation. Only have this option for those on the map. Can change your view/vote once per week if wanted, if not your original vote stays until you do.

I wonder if there could be a Permanent training nation on an unused tiny island on the map, for the first x hours of play, that would come with a small daily stipend to help newcomers get started, lead by a rotating position (king) from those who wish to teach. There would be rules against certain activities or warring while in this nation. After the training missions are done, and play hours exceeded, they then must choose a new nation.

For nations not on the map:
1. follows as is now.

I disagree with all this information on the main page before joining the game. if you put too much, people will always choose the "most powerful" nation to start, nobody is so fool to start in a nation where there is nobody, where people are weak, ... you start in a big group where you know you can get help and advice. if you put too much, you risk that instead of having 30 nations, you will have 5 extremely powerful nations and 25 abandoned nations.

I have played many other games and the problem is always the same. Everyone wants many guilds and many nations, but at the same time everyone goes where he can win. So even veterans won't stay in a weak nation or guild if they will lose, they will switch. Same for newcomers.
It's why i would prefer a random selection of a starting nation, then people switch. And with the action of switching, some nations will be erased or blocked for newcomers. In every game there is this problem, that we all go in the biggest group to win, we don't start a game to lose (and to waste our time).

About mentoring: if there was a clear wikipedia with every explanation, i wouldn't need a mentor to understand the game :) in that way every guild could link some wikis to newcomers and the work would be easier. I always have tried to be a mentor in many games, but if there isn't a publi official wiki of the game, it is tiring every time (in every guild) to re-explain everything with pictures and good explanations (Sometimes even in different languages). Thus i understand that many veterans would like to play with other veterans and not explaining the game to newcomers.
So the mentoring has to be made by the administration firstly, then on details by the guild or the nation.

There is no wrong way to play this game. Your comment that veterans won't stay in a weaker nation is not accurate. Many veterans play in their own nations for a variety of reasons.

My vision is maybe not perfect, but it's accurate :D check the nation list and you will see many people coming from an english island called isle of man ... or many from USA or spain. Now i will join spain because switzerland is abandoned. Don't tell me that many people are in their real nation, i wouldn't trust you. not many are playing in their real nation because it wouldn't have any sense.
If there are so few active nations, it means that the large majority of the community changed its nationality to get a stronger one :) i am not wrong on that.

What i said is that we risk (and i saw that in many other games, which many collapsed) that many people go to a specific nation and this nation becomes too powerful and it monopolizes the game. Same for some players who will monopolize every field (plantations, navy, ...)

As a newborn now, i don't need to interact with people ! and it is sad for a community game. Why ? because i must attack NPCs cause i have 0 chances to defeat other unbeatable players. What is the sense of a community game if not playing all together or against ? interacting :D instead of playing against NPC

This is not the first time a nation has risen and conquered a large chunk of the map. The larger a nation, the more spread thin they are. Ports can be hit all but anonymously. Large nations never last. This is nothing new to this game. Nations change every couple of months.

yeah but maybe now USA is stronger, tomorrow will be spain stronger and after it wil be isle of man ... but there will never be place for Switzerland or Kazakstan or Vatican State :D it is what i meant. There will always be some 4-5 nations who everyone will follow. And i think that a monopole like that can be really boring. And in every game i have ever played, when there is a reduction of groups so important, the risk is that when one wins, many people leave the game ... and the game collapses

You are wrong. Biggest nations change. Egypt, Barbados, Midway Islands, Bermuda, UK, etc. at one time had controlling interest in the map. Hell at several times Pirates controlled a few ports (although that wasn't very long). At one point the USA didn't have a port, neither did Isle of Man. Players came together and formed or rebuilt the nation and took over ports.

The game and map changes. Small nations can build and own a port.

i think you misunderstand the point :) i don't care if once UK or Barbados or whatever held a port ... because at the end they were always same player involved. If you have 5 players and once they are part of USa, once of spain, once of Barbados ... it doesn't mean that the power variates, it's always in the same hands but behind different flags :) and what i see in this game is that people change nations and newcomers are "induced" in going in rich nations to get advantages. Now, if today the name of the wealthy and powerful nation is USA + Spain + isle of man and tomorrow they are Egypt + Barbados + Vatican State, the point is always the same :) always the same people will be behind that.

The discussion started because newcomers are induced in going in always the same nations to get advantages, not to remain alone in their abandoned nation.

The people behind some of the previous nations are not the same as those running the nations today. Yes, there will be some older vets joining in, but it isn't just them. New faces appear. So essentially you are wrong.

You just saw that i am not wrong :D in our guild a guy will leave Greece to join spain cause Greece is inactive :D you see ? people leave to join a bigger and wealthier nation, they don't care to spend time (at the beginning) to revive a nation when they don't know how the game works and when they don't have money to waste.
so your idea that people spread among nations to play is wrong :)
