Typically they do neither: they just moan loudly that the game has become rubbish : a pirates life is not easy and nor should it be : same goes for traders. But its a sad phenonemon that too many players want easy targets with little risk and anything else is 'boring!'.

Why are you dragging this post down and being a whiner? This was not the intent of the post, I am not complaining about not having easy targets or the game being rubbish. I am just saddened to see the game activity level decline. This game has a lot of merit in a lot of different areas and allows for a multitude of playstyles. I just want to see it buzzing again.

as I said before banger, this game has it's lulls from time to time, and there are times when all is calm, activity is low or people are just keeping to themselves, but then a spark happens and things get exciting. Sort of like real life, sometimes everything is calm, steady and perhaps a bit boring, but sooner or later a storm hits, or something crazy happens and things heat up. Just wait a bit and things will change.

This game has always had a big dip in activity at this time of year. Its nothing new. My response was on topic to the post I was responding to : unless the forum rules have been quietly changed and only optimistic up-beat posts are now permitted... As for whining, welll that does somewhat sum up the OP so I guess that makes me on-topic for that too?

I appreciate your optimism but this is a bit more than a lul I am afraid. Granted I haven't played the game for as long as folks like Danik or Tom Lowe or CDV etc. and they may have a better perspective on the cycles of this game but lets look at the fact. Most days outside of your current RP thread there are virtually no threads that garner posts nor are there any new threads created. Activity in game is greatly diminished as well, less active guilds with less active players. Most guild chats are stagnant from the folks I have spoken too. We can't leave the blinders on or look at it through rose colored glasses. There needs to be some spark to garner interest or in a few months time it will just be a handful of us sitting around the tavern in Goroum talking about the good ol days.

Well, when merchants got tougher to hit then why was that?

Goose / Golden / Cooked

Shame. I'll drop a bent nickel in a jobless pirates collecting tin.

That wasn't the intent of my post. Piracy is supposed to be difficult. I'm pointing to a parallel that I've noticed. Activity has decreased while at the same time, there has been a rash of over farming complaints and counter action which I see as over protection of newer players. Coinciding with this, newer players are also developing faster in the game, yet still being treated as newer players.

Lulls in gameplay in August has always been the norm in my experience. Students getting ready to go back to school, people grabbing the last weeks of summer before back to the usual.
Time spent doing other activities etc. Boring is the time to make GC.
The older you get, the more you realize boring is good because most of the excitement you experience turns out to be the wrong kind.
Exciting times is when you spend your GC unless you are pouring resources into other expensive projects to which I think might be happening right now.

Do you mean through an introduction of new mechanics or just incentives for new players? A lot of people are put off by the game from its first looks and it's not exactly the easiest game to find in the first place, baring in mind I stumbled across it randomly on an obscure reddit post :D

A blend of things I think would help. I agree this game is a bit of a turn off initially, especially if you have not played this style of game. I hadn't ever played a game like this and a first I was like, "Meh" but luckily, I sought answers of the right people and learned very quickly. I think we could do a better job catching new players and helping them get acclimated but player retention is also important and I know several players who have quit because they got bored or just practiced the "set it and forget it" method and eventually just forgot it lol.
