What are Plantations? Can I steal them with my ships and voodoo?

I understand the small diner/small patronage analogy...but my decline from 5 stars to 0 stars in my utility building happened in mere hours. Once I hit five stars, I left 20% of my acres devoted to utility building and shifted the improvement to the housing. Now housing is 1.5 stars and utility is 0 stars. If I can't sub-divide the improvements between areas, how will I keep gained improvements?

Workers went from 3000 to 9000 in that time, but the acres division remained constant.

Didn't you hear? Those are features that will be implemented with Flagship and the Witch Hut.

I do see that my tools were depleted...once the stars are achieved and focus on improvement moves on, I am assuming I still need to have the hourly resources available to preserve the improvements?

Made some calculations of costs for running plantations:
60 fleets for immis costing 160k each (what the fleets doing regular trade makes with some boosters)=9.6M
8k GB=20M
100k food 0,4M
sums up to 30 M every day (not counting all the other goods needed to be transported around to keep plantations working)
All this after paying leases and 800 creds worth about 200mil
In return I get a production valued at about 4 mil. That's from working my workers 8/hrs/day Could possible go up to 6-8, still a very bad deal.

Aye. I have already dropped 2 plantations and fired all the workers. Plantation in Seaglory is absolutely useless. You sell Cotton back to port at 1 gc. Since every fleet I have is dedicated to bringing in workers and supplies, there is no profit in Seaglory now Neopolis

This may change when other port buildings are added, but right now that is the case.
