When I first created my account, I never thought I'd be interested in this sort of a game. A text-based game that is. Always been into the MMORPG's and first person shooters. But as soon as I got through the first few hurdles, I was approached to join a guild. I still had no clue what I was doing, but there was 1 guy in that guild that kept explaining things to me. And the longer I stayed, the more secrets he revealed to me. Being part of the guild was a big help, but this 1 person... He did it for me.

Now a year and a bit on, there's so many reasons I'm still hanging around! :D

All the new replies seem that could be summarized in "I stayed for the cummunity".

I wonder how much the game influences the community. I mean, if this game has such a great comunity, and not another one there must be a reason in the game itself.

the community makes the game challenging. politics, spies, allies, enemies, tactics. They're all part of the community that keeps me in this game. Just hope that we're going to get the promised major updates, so the game itself becomes a reason to stay again too.

Updates always happen. A few years ago hideouts and banks were just a vague possibility. Players used to build ships and have others commandeer them as a form of payment.

No idea why I've stayed this long but I keep logging in, going from trading to treasure hunter to pirate and then trading again. Had my backside kicked all over the place a couple of times but then come back for more.

I know, but all recent major update promises have been postponed. Not much happening at the moment. Just some small changes. A lot of people leave because of it I reckon.

Now that you mention that, I think that a plus of this game above others it that when you choose a path, you can always switch to another. A player may have been a trader for years and then become... a pirate? A witch doctor? A mercenary? A smaller merchant that gains not from trading but from NPC hunting? A merchant that instead of building ships, hunts for them? Etc, etc.
Despite the fact that some players whine that there are just two playstyles, pirates and merchants, this game has a lot of shades in between.

I also like the fact that its impossible to lose this game. in some online games if you get crushed by another player that's it. Your done. In this game, no one can truly destroy another player. They can cripple them, stop their progress, but eventually the player will be able to come back from anything-especially if the player is smart enough to have some good backbones and reserves in case of such an event. I can rest easy knowing even if I wake up tomorrow and finding out I was defleeted, I can rebuild and come back from it, or focus my attention on paying my attackers back then rebuilding.
