I like the heart and spirit in which TH and Dej are working and thinking. We all love the game and stay thru the thick and thin, while we watch many just joined rarely break 100 fame.

These folks pop in and find something different and don't bother. A few get to 100 fame and die on the vine.

I don't know the answer. We invite many into ~*~, and I would guess 30 to 60%% go inactive for one reason or another. They sometimes come back Sometimes they don't.

Guilds help, but I don't think a new player guild is the answer. Devs and Admin are working to update the interface, so it may help get new players a little deeper into PG.

PG may be classified as a game; in actuality, it feels more like a hobby. Think of stamp collecting, and model railroading - only PG is online in a community. Some people collect vast amounts of swag, others build battle and raiding plans, and others trade networks, and some just enjoy doing and trying with what is here.

There truly are no winners or losers - we have players who do many things different ways for different reasons. Some are in Avonmora for several hours a day, others check in every couple of days. One size does not (or has to) fit all.

Getting new players past the character creation is tough - but we have some tools we can use a bit better. Instead of inviting every new player to join our guilds, why not say hi, and offer to help, or simply find out where they are from?

Face it, some will answer, some won't, but a simple hi shows you will help out with no hidden agenda or commitment for a new player. Every current player can be a mentor, veteran or not -

That be me thoughts; buy a mate a wee bit of grog and see where it takes ye....

This man knows his stuff. Add the friendly personal touch and you'll notice the difference in retention.

Don't think we should have a true training guild. Every games has players that quit, for one reason or another. However, think of all the players that do stay. Those who don't talk much, they keep to themselves and hide their assets. The community is much larger than you think. I agree, a simple hi, and an offer to help those new players is the best way. The answer is not to help every new players, aka the ones who NEED help. The answer is to help those who WANT it. If they ask for it, and stay, that is good.
