Vikings would land in an unexpected area, rush in, kill, loot then rush out before a proper defense could be rallied. They also believed the worst death would be being killed while running, so they would never surrender of flee from a fight even if they were losing. Pirates on the other hand, would have no problem with running away from a fight if they were scared of didn't believe they could win. So once more, in a fight between the 2, if its on land the Viking would most likely win. The only way pirates would win is if its out at sea in an area that isn't in shallow waters.
Sloop were designed for the same thing. Again, depends on the pirate, Edward teach never ran.
Yes some pirates may have been like that and would never run. But it was a belief in viking religion that one would die at a certain time no matter what, so virtually EVERY viking would fight to the death and never retreat. While i suspect only a very few number of pirates were the same way. In fact didnt Teach's own crew surrender after he died in his final battle? While if the leader of a viking raid died the rest would have fought on until they died with him or won.
Consider this: you are the captain of a Viking ship, and you see a strange ship come up to yours, about 50 feet away, all of a sudden a burst of fire comes from the cannons, your probably think it's some sort of supernatural thing.
