The whole debate started with a difference on who should be the successor of the prophet. Somewhere down that line some difference in the way the religion is practiced occurred. While there are differences and people with extreme opinions on both sides, a religious difference of opinion is more appropriate than a war. Much like Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans and mormans

Yes salafi/wahabbi/ takiri play a part, but the conflict has claimed more lives than any other.
