Roleplaying

Postby Jack Teach » Wed Dec 13, 2017 4:06 am

You know mates, I have noticed that for an RPG game, there is very little roleplaying in it. I was wondering if anyone could give any ideas on how we could put more use of one's character in the game. ANY ideas are appreciated.

On a serious note. This is a good topic. I’ll put some thought into it. ;)

Roleplaying is tricky.

As a newbie, you focus on learning the game. And you don't know the community. Roleplaying both as a newbie, and towards newbies, is therefore extra hard.

When I had played for a while, and become Envoy to the T'zak Ryn, I tried sending some messages "in character". In some cases, that worked well, and the receiver responded "in character" as well. In many cases, though, I got replies along the lines "you sure take this game too seriously", or "really, it's just a game". Makes it hard. And even those who DID respond well to such messages, well, eventually, you get to know the people better. There are other things to discuss, and one has to get out of character.

And even now, trying to stay in character on topic - even against some of the players I respect most - actually gets me replies like "relax, it's just a game!". Yes, I KNOW it's a game, just trying to play it.

Role playing is hard unless the entire community really tries to do so. And even then it's hard, because often you need to discuss other things, like rule suggestions and such, and then getting back in character with your next message is not easy.

Arr, I could indeed, matey.

There be another problem too, for me and me crew. When bein' contacted by some scurvy sea dog ta do some plunderin' fer a bit 'o rum and gold, we needs ta be discussin' the details. And this, see, gets troublesome doin' in character, as we needs ta be referrin' ta actual game mechanics. "We'll sink his ships and steal his gold" just ain't precise enough fer these here contracts, see.

I approve this message in both of its meanings.

The last time we role played I ripped a huge fart that gagged the tavern.

In all seriousness, role playing can be very fun, but doing it outside of a dedicated topic can be difficult.

It's difficult enough speaking pirate if your first language is English. For many other players English is a second or third language so they probably won't. I'd rather focus on playing the game and leaving the role playing to the few that can and want to.
