So Shadowood has told his version. A lot of it is close to the truth, but there are important differences. Let’s take a look at the T’zak Ryn version:
Dman and xProx were cooperating on attacks on T’zak Ryn. The background for this is partly unclear, and also not really relevant. T’zak Ryn responded to this, obviously, and Dman came under a lot of fire. Dman was part of VUDU, so we could of course have decided that we should hit back on them all, but in this case we did not. Our belief was that it was Dman’s intention to start a war between T’zak Ryn and Vudu, to hurt both guilds. We were sure that he wanted to hurt T’zak Ryn, at least, and dragging all of VUDU into it would help him do that. So we decided to go after Dman only.
Next thing, Dman is getting assistance from several VUDU members.
Certainly now, at least, T’zak Ryn should attack the entire guild? We still held back, thinking this would help Dman’s mission to start a war. Instead, we contact the guild leadership. We ask them to stop aiding Dman. However, they refuse to do so.
So NOW T’zak Ryn attacks all of VUDU, right? No. We check who in VUDU helps him, and who don’t. We go only specifically after those members helping Dman. THEY get a lot of heat, of course. But we leave the others out, to reduce Dman’s “victory” in starting a T’zak Ryn – VUDU war.
Then Dman continues to escalate the conflict, both by certain Tavern posts, and by using bounties, trying to drag in more VUDU members. T’zak Ryn explains to VUDU that this is Dman trying to start a war. Shadowood responds by declaring a guild war in the forum.
Right. So now T’zak Ryn really has no choice but to destroy all of VUDU, of course? Again, T’zak Ryn restrains itself. We contact VUDU members, asking them if this is really what they want. Rather than do the obvious thing in a guild war, go after the large traders when they least expect it, we contact them. Give them the option to stay entirely out of the war. Some accept to do so, and we have left them alone.
Seeing his comrades in arms taking substantial damage, and having to defleet, Shadowood eventually comes to the realization that maybe this has gone on long enough. He comes to the T’zak Ryn asking for peace. And the terms we demand are not quite what Shadowood claims. Yes, we would primarily want Dman and Lilone gone from their guild. But we were, albeit reluctantly, willing to accept that Shadowood guarantee none of his guild mates attack T’zak Ryn. And we did not demand that he admitted “he was in the wrong”. We did, however, demand that he admit HE was the one coming to us for peace, as that was the case. T’zak Ryn does not plead for peace that easily.
Asking for peace, then turning down this offer, is a lot like saying: "Hey, will you guys stop attacking us? No guarantees that our guys won't be attacking you, but we still want you to stop".
Shadowood claims that asking his guild to not aid Dman in his fight with T’zak Ryn was unreasonable. They were in the same guild, after all, and should help each other. I say we were the reasonable ones here. We gave VUDU the choice to stop supporting Dman, rather than automatically assume they were a team, and that Dman’s actions were supported by the guild. If we saw them all as a team, we would hold all of them responsible for the actions of each of them (which is no more or less than we expect of others). But we saw these acions as that of Dman only, trying to start a war.
Those who DID continue to support Dman, were of course seen as accomplices in his actions, and faced the consequences of that. If you are a team, you take responsibility for your team mates actions. If a member of the T’zak Ryn makes a major attack against someone without the consent of the guild – well, that guy is in trouble. We will apologize to his target for his actions, and give him a clear warning. Next time, he’ll need to find another guild. We ARE a team, and act as one.
Anyway. I guess this is not really the “war tales” you wanted to hear. When I get the time, I’ll tell the story of the Banger attack. That’s much more exciting and interesting than this boring “why do we fight” discussion :-)
