Yes the American Football League of 1960-69 (The American Football League existed 4 times 1926, 1936, 1940, and 1960-69. Each different in their own respects). However, the All American Football Conference (AAFC) had a bigger impact on Football that still carries on to this day.
I don't think we need to go back to the AFL. What needs to happen is the owners need to grow a set of balls. The overpaid workers (players) need to understand that they work for the owners, not the other way around. They seem to think that there aren't other players out there that are willing to play the game and potentially for less money. The players dont' run the show. They can be replaced. As well, the fans pay their salaries. Where do they think they get all their money from.
