Isn't this suggestion worth a brainstorming? Many are pondering about voodoo in the witch doctor thread. Perhaps adding some interest in battles would divert people to play the witch doctor?

I don't think this by itself will, but it would add measure to conducting battles to make it more strategy based. This would still require the use of voodoo to initiate plundering in mass.

Maybe have a tile based fighting sistem, where when you attack a target you have a choice to fight manually or automatically. And the defender will always defend automatically, but only manually on fleets he marked as important.

I'd wish a battle engine like the one of the old tabletop game Wooden Ships & Iron Men. Do anyone remember it?

This battle mechanic thread will be one of the items on my wish list, if it makes it into the suggestion side of the forums...

The idea of formations is compelling, and would shake things up.

I would like to see something like formations combined with another idea I shared concerning how ships in a fleet engage one another:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3965

Combine formations with a battle mechanic that treats all ships in a fleet like they are engaged in a real time battle rather than lining them up to fight one at a time would make for interesting engagements...

The formation in which your ships engage an enemy, the formation your enemy is assigned to defend with, the type of ships in the fleet and order in which they are lined up to engage in battle, the player's tech loaded on each ship, ship attributes with which ship types were constructed at shipwright, certain customizable stat bonuses from Flagship being assigned to one's fleet...

The answer to creating engaging, strategic, skillful naval encounters lies in a union of all of those suggestions, in my opinion, not any one on suggestion on its own. I hope something like this is the future of naval combat in the game.
