It isn't illegal to own a quad 50 or any other automatic weapon/machine guns, it is just difficult to do so.

Difference between highly regulated and illegal. Illegal infers that there is no legal means for you to possess it. All you need is a Class 3 Federal Firearms License. (I'm assuming you live in the USA)
