retrofit (new tech suggested by shadwood)

Below a post that Shadow made in "vane's pro's and cons"
i see merit in this and like to discuss it a bit more. i took it in a separate suggestion for that reason.

Pirate flag ship must be a ship plundered. Ability to retrofit in shipwright. Pirates rarely built ship but refit ships to fit their needs.

On the con side, nation change missions could be tied to hostility with that nation. XXX gold x hostility for bribe.

Other than that, looks god to me. Upside and downside maintains balance some have raised concern about.

Let's see what others think.

I like this idea to a certain degree... I was actually trying to think of a new tech called "Retrofit" that be added to Hideout.

    - Perhaps a prerequisite would be Marina lvl 10 or 15
    - A sailor must dock a ship in his/her marina to start the Retrofit process. (this takes turns to put in and take out once down, plus takes up space at marina)
    - Lvl 1 Retrofit you can upgrade 1 tier class of ship. I.E. Cutter into a Sloop or a Howker into a Galleon
    - Lvl 20 Retrofit you can upgrade any tier class of ship to Flag Galleon or less. Large Frig, SoLT and MoW are off limits.
    - To Retrofit this would cost Materials (Wood, Iron, Cotton, Food), Gold Coin (a reasonable amount, obviously less then it takes to build a new ship), Turns and Time
    - To Lvl up Retrofit it would take Gold Coin, Gold Bars, Time
    - I think a version of this idea has been suggested before....

Or you could just make this "Pirate Only" and have a few boats to select from.
Trade Ship must be Plundered
Howker into Sloop
Galleon into War Galleon
LMM into Frigrate

**Flagship is its own feature and should not be included in this. IMO**

This is just a very rough idea as you can see, but it was just a thought.

refitting is not just having time, resources and the gold. it is about knowledge and experience! to retrofit right a new specialized officer is needed the master builder!
master builders are not just officers with theoretical knowledge, but former seafaring captains who choose a carreer on land.
Each retrofit level need 20 'common officers' for each level. to think that it's easy to make a sloop out of a cutter is wishful thinking, it's harder than building a sloop even when it's cheaper to do so.
with 20 captains transforming in 'master builders' the cost of retrofitting is high especially after level 10!
to develop retrofit tech will keep your captains count the same, but the number of captains that can be employed on ships will decrease dramatically.
for most pirates that's not a problem. for those pirate wannabees ( :D :( ) with lot's of fleets it is.

I find a problem with this idea. You can't retrofit between different hull sized ships, it just isn't logical. You can't take a howker and make into a large ship like a trade galleon, unless you are disassembling the ship, salvaging the scraps, and building the new ship.

Furthermore, how are levels and attributes handled. Does a level 10 howker retrofit into a level 10 cutter?

I agree with this part. Flagship should be same class ship as the plundered. If you only get 1, you better make it good. A war galleon is still a war galleon. the retrofit should go along with ideas laid out earlier as far as load out. +/- 10-20% guns cannons or cargo depending on what people think is the right number.

If the retrofit/ Flagship tech is going to be used, there will be a cost associated with it, be it research, gold bars/coins/ turns. I would think attribute distribution could be included in this similar to remodel card. The cost will already be built into the flagship tech.

Thoughts?
