I do not see anywhere he said they were merchants.
Perhaps he is just building lots of raiding fleets.

He was playing under an alias and running lmm fleets when I joined the game. Oddly I had no idea who he was and I would attack his lmms with some heavily armed sloops. Later when I learned more about him and his preferred methods, i found that a bit ironic. Later on, we met and Avery taught me many things about the game. I would not be surprised to see him succeed at any direction he choose to pursue.
