Well, that's the point of this discussion. To come up with a viable path for Nations to collect debt and for debtors to pay them back. Providing a path for one, will create or help create the path for the other.

Well, thats been done before (during the FOX incursion into Mexico for one)... and got nowhere : read CJ's post again : no automatic seizure and debts will just disappear after a given period.. all nonsense, why do it that way when there is no means to collect them between creating them and them disappearing anyway, they just clutter up a pointless list called 'nation debts' until some arbitary period will remove them.

I have people who don't even belong to the nation owing the nation. I think it came from the loan insurance. Now that the country own their debt, I still think that their should be a way to collect. Perhaps a National Bank or sort or expand the treasury functions?

So as it is, I guess the national debt only makes sense for those who are in the nation, or want to enter it, since having debt while in the nation will incure hostility and make staying in the nation or entering it impossible. Do players with debt who are NOT in the nation also get hostility as long as they have the debt?

No : hostility is gained only when interest starts to get added to a tax debt at the reset following the debt going over the threshhold (which can be set high or low by the nation) : once you leave the nation interest stops being added and no further hostility is gained. In practical terms, you could rejoin the nation after 75 hours, then at the next reset, interest and hostility gain recommences, get booted after 75 hours and then repeat the cycle forever

Your fleets could not be repaired for the as the shipwright questions your ability to pay. You have (x) amount of debt with Nation/Bank

You could hire no crew in (x) as the seamen fear you can not pay them wages. You have (x) amount of debt with Nation/Bank

For God and Country!! 10 Crewmen loyal to the Nation of (x) slipped away in the night stealing 20 crates each. Your debt to (x) has been reduced by (Crewmen X Crates X Base Price Commodity)

Just spit balling but here are a few ideas I have for collection.

That can lead to a stalemate. If this is your last fleet, what will you do? Not play?

I would like for the hostility to increase as long as you have a debt above a certain threshold against the nation. However, that might make some trouble with nation missions, if we get inactives with no fleets cluttering the enemy lists because of hostility due to long-time debt.

Of course put limits so people could carry on but have penalties and accountability are needed to debts.

First suggestion only applies to vessels over 50

Second, crew over 5000

Third, random in game action.

I also think you should not be able to just change nations. If you have multiple unpaid debts with Nations and Banks that should force you into Piracy.
