The learning curve in Avonmora be more than learnin' what curses do, what ships beat what ships and how to make gold coin - wouldn't be much of a game if it were.
The gift be to build ye character - take ye lumps and learn from 'em. Take all these tools and wonders, make a plan and see if ye can pull it off - just castin' voodoo or plunderin/skirmishin' their fleets and hopin' someone doesn't do anything isn't a plan - what are ye gonna do if they do come back at ya? I can promise ye this - they are going to do something to make certain ye think twice before ye do it again....so your gambit best be one that be ready for a storm....
Don't make enemies, just adversaries. My best friends and I have exchanged cannon fire as well as fired upon the same target. The game be about learnin' by doin' - usin' what ye have - and don't have - and see what ye can do with it. I've learned a whale of alot more by gettin' me tail kicked than I have by winning....
I recall a story before my time of a young captain goin' after a notorious pirate's fleets, only to lose everything he had - he was taken clear down to the waterline. That young captain learned a few things from that tough old pirate. I speak of Captain Dungeness who had the priviledge to be schoolled by no other than Black Sparrow.
We do learn a few things in our victories, but mates, we learn much more in our defeats - primarily, unique ways of using the ships, the voodoo, the tools and situations to apply to combat. How we come back from them be the honor as we gain a respect for those we do battle with - do the honor of at least havin' a plan before ye just start tryin' to gain a bit of swag or fame, and be ready for a storm coming your way afterwards...you'll learn alot.
You'll discover swag and fame come and go, but honor and respect, there be somethin' worth havin'!
