Strawman of the century. I never mentioned a tv. I'm aware cheap ones exist. $13/hour full time with 2 weeks of unpaid vacation/sick time is $26,000 a year. That is below the poverty line for a family of 3 and slightly above it for a couple or if you're single. In today's market, that is enough for rent, food, and perhaps one or two cheap TVs

I'm not sure when you went to prison because I'm not sure how old you are but 13 dollars when I was a toddler went way further than $13 now. Sure minimum wage is ok for teens who just want a little bit of income to buy stuff or save for something but minimum wage for an adult does not go nearly as far. This could be wrong but the absolute lowest minimum wage I've searched up is $7.25. Usually most people work 8 to 10 hours. 8x7.25= $58
Some states apparently the minimum wage is $15 an hour. 15x8= $120. Now I'm assuming and I could be wrong that more states have their minimum wage at $15. If you worked every single day you would get $840 dollars but at least in Australia almost every employer gives their workers one day off per week to reduce burnout. Not sure if it is the same in America but that would leave you with a wage of $720 per week which is not much considering you will have very little once you pay for groceries, power, gas, water, mortgage or if you rent then just rent. That is not much. But sure technically you can live off it but barely. With a wage like that you won't ever be able to buy a house even if you buy just the essentials and no luxury or recreational things and save all the spare money you have.

Now I have no idea if your story is true because I can't verify myself but I'm going to assume it is truthful. In that case I admire your determination and courage to work hard and provide for your family.

You said that dman listed a bunch of luxuries that 13 an hour couldn't afford. On that list, tv was one of them. The most expensive one on that list too mind you. But hey, which luxury were you actually talking about? The tylenol? That costs less then 10 bucks? Or maybe you were referring to the radio? Can find those under 50. Perhaps you were referring to long johns? I assume he meant the clothing, which again, under 50 bucks. The fast food would be the same though unless you buy a lot.

Yes, 13 an hour is below the poverty line if you have a kid. That's irrelevant. Kids are a choice. If you can't afford to take care of your spouse and your kid with that kind of money, either have your spouse work also, or don't have a kid you can't afford.

$13 an hour can barely afford rent, food, electrical, water, healthcare, insurance, transportation etc. My point was that after all those things you won't have much if any leftover for those luxuries. If you're living with your parents rent free then $13 an hour is fine. If you're on your own trying to live a good life it's not.

Depends where you live. Cost of living here in Kansas is nice and cheap. 13 an hour is plenty for a single person. California on the other hand, is a nightmare with it's costs.

Regardless if you're making enough to cover all your necessities, then you're living a good life. Luxuries are just that- LUXURIES. Nice to have, but if you can't afford them, don't. You can also always look for ways to up the money you make, with overtime or side jobs, or cut your costs of living.

Trying to get the government to fix everything, or whining about your status in life, won't do crap. Will probably just make it worse. Like old Reagan said. Most terrifying thing you can hear is these 9 words.

Simply surviving is not a good life. No one wants to just survive. People want to LIVE. Having barely enough money to cover what you need knowing that if you miss a paycheck you'll get evicted doesn't sound like a "nice life" to me. You can always turn down help from the government if you don't want or need it. You can't get it though if they refuse to give it even if you do need it. Cost of living is much more expensive than it used to be, compared to the average wage. What are people supposed to do? Work harder? Work overtime? And what about when even that isn't enough? Do we just cope that we have been screwed over while the people at the top are making billions and we can't afford rent from a 70 hour a week job? When is enough enough?
