Protestors wandered from the city up the Shrine of Rememberance. The crowd grew to a few thousand. The police held 2 lines. Batons and all the riot gear at the ready. One line was closer to the protestors and another outer ring. Over time they would advance toward the protestors who werent doing a great deal..mostly chanting - ( 210 arrested for throwing stuff etc ) With each advancement of the police line, some protestors would leave.. so by dusk they were left with the troublemakers.. (I havent seen a great deal of vision of dusk - just some slight scuffles and a few more arrests)
First off in the day, police did use rubber bullets, spray and batons to show meant biznz.

Police initially ordered the media helicopters to go away then it was changed to not display any vision until over an hour after it is taken so as to not show the protestors what the police were up to and where they were. This is now standard. It was realised another incursion of freedom should the media be unable to attend or film - ( I was chatting with someone in the US yesterday, who, kindly, was feeding me current links to live fb footage - I said to him at the time it wasn't showing here on the live feed on tv and when I tried to open the links he sent there was a message saying I did not have permission to view 'YET' ... } - that's all a bit China/North Korea for me!! :o:

The shrine is regarded as sacred so there is a lot of tears about that today .. how disrespectful it was for the mob to even go there for this purpose, let alone settle in for the day and practice civil disobedience etc

The construction workers say they will protest every day until the mandate is removed. All protagonists in this debacle claim the ppl attending are not all construction workers..that many are activists for anything... but the media we do see, seems to talk to only construction workers lol :shrug

On top of all that Monssieur Macron is 'hurt' as Scomo didnt even discuss the discontinuance of the naval sub contract - French Defence minister claims very little of the 90B contract actually went to France - they got only 10M and the USA got the rest for armoury and tech installations -

China wants Taiwan like it wants HongKong - and has made numerous threats against Australia of late,- supporting Taiwans independence and being close ally to the USA, setting trade sanctions also and boasting about long range missiles that can reach across the seas with ease ..

What a mess lol - Nostradamus may be right in some of his quatrains :D :D

yeah what I don't get about those French submarines is why not have a mix of normal diesel submarines and nuclear submarines instead of just straight up canceling it like they could have reduced the number to say 6 or something

Diesel/Electric submarines are limited by several things compared to nuclear powered submarines.

1) Fuel
2) Speed while submerged.
3) Length of submergence.

With China possessing nuclear powered submarines, using diesel electric subs would put Australia at a disadvantage with China's expansion in the areas.

Ports capable of handling nuke subs are not a cheap matter : infrastructure and trained techs as well as securing the location and storage and servicing of warheads limits options as not any old naval harbour will do.

Thus handing over the tech to Aus to build nukes is also going to mean that Aus will need to build and maintain such a port (as the UK do at Faslane, for example.). Which will be more than useful to the US if the brown stuff hits the whirly machine with China.

China rattling it long-range missiles is just wagging : the US is still more than capable of obliterating Mainland China in a heartbeat and China is well aware of that. The dick-wagging is more for domestic consumption than actual 'hard diplomacy', much like Russia used the threat of US/NATO aggression to keep yhe peasants distracted from domestic problems.

Nothing like an external threat to unite the masses, a ploy not restricted to to any one shade of political thought.

From what I have read, Diesel/Electric subs generally tend to be much quieter than nuclear powered subs however, it has been reported that these French subs make more noise than a 25 yr old washing machine.

Probably the excess noise reported by the French subs is hyperbole for justification to back out of the deal.

A subs greatest asset is its ability to remain undetected so if generally, Diesel/Electric is on avg more quiet, but lack range or submersible time is a disadvantage as Lach said, a mixture of diesel/electric and nuclear would maybe be the best option.

Australia has six diesel/elec subs, dye to leave service in the 2030's. The French deal was to replace them with twelve new subs.
The US/UK nuke sub deal would not exclude Aus from keeping/adding a diesel/elec element to their fleet.

The premier of Victoria is not the brightest star in the political galaxy..
He has over-reacted wherever possible.

But the 2 week shutdown in Melbourne was completely justified, and it had nothing to do with anti-vax per se.
73% of the building sites audited in the weeks prior were non-compliant with the covid safe practices they had agreed to operate under.
The purpose of the 2 weeks is to give the sites a chance to get their house in order.

We did the same thing in Sydney about 6 weeks ago, all sites have been running at 50% workforce capacity since they rebooted, operating with full support of the trade unions, prime contractors and the public. As of Monday they go to 100% capacity here, basically operating as normal, but within covid safe standards.

The problem in Melbourne is a result of Daniels' dictatorial approach, failure to consult and get key constituents onboard, and not just this time.
He is the political definitive of a dead man walking

Yes, diesel electric subs are considerably more quit when running electric compared to nuclear subs because there are fewer moving parts. However, that comes at a cost to speed, submersible time, and the need to surface. Surfacing reducing the stealth of submarine. When a sub has to surface, it it can be seen from the air or surface and then tracked for offensive or defensive actions.

Was there not an incident recently during NATO maneuvers where a Nordic( I forget which country) diesel/electric was able to get into firing range of a US carrier and "sink" it ?

Not that I can find. The only reference to diesel submarines during NATO maneuvers was in reference Russia's Kilo-Class Diesel Electric Attack submarines sailing surfaced through NATO exercises in the Barents Sea.

If you do find it, post a link.

Thanks for the link...

The article provides the reasoning of why diesel subs while more stealthy are not practical for the needs of Australia's submarine force.

Diesel submarines are ideal for patrolling close to friendly shores. But U.S. subs off Asia and Europe need to travel thousands of miles just to get there, and then remain deployed for months at a time. A diesel submarine may be able to traverse that distance—but it would then require frequent refueling at sea to complete a long deployment.
