See, that is one of those things where russia is one step ahead. According to what I read, they preffer Yandex. And facebook? They have their own thing. Internet across the country? They dont need the global one (whatever that means, really). Why do they Actually do need these options, not sure...
The internet works on scale : the backbone requires substantial infrastructure to keep it running at a capacity high enough to allow us all to surf pretty much instantaneously. Google, Amazon and the comparable majors across the world provide that scale. We have almost minimal cost cloud storage and computing for that reason.
Google broke the Microsoft model for monetising software and OS. So they wont be crying if the google goes toodle-pip.
Of more concern is the stuff it does that is not obviously 'google' : the R&D that underpins progress. It also straight-jackets it into a future income stream for google itself. So, it is comparable to Big Oil and the motor industry in that regard : it decides what is 'useful' and what is not. It has no interest in funding research or solutions that might conflict with its own financial interests. Like all disruptive technologies it then seeks to stop newer techs disrupting them and becomes the established order itself. So, there might well be gains made with its passing allowing newer disruptive techs to emerge.
