Vikings ships were specifically made to be able to sail in shallow waters, and rivers, and to land safely in places that most ships would be unable to land on without becoming beached. Vikings would land in an unexpected area, rush in, kill, loot then rush out before a proper defense could be rallied. They also believed the worst death would be being killed while running, so they would never surrender of flee from a fight even if they were losing. Pirates on the other hand, would have no problem with running away from a fight if they were scared of didn't believe they could win. So once more, in a fight between the 2, if its on land the Viking would most likely win. The only way pirates would win is if its out at sea in an area that isn't in shallow waters.
