DoS wrote:Those quotes are literally from a book called, "The Art of War." I read the entire thing. All the chapters are about war.

And if you just saw the name of the chapters, it is obvious all of it pertains only to war and nothing more.

As well, major portions of the book don't even come from Sun Tzu. There are a LOT of Chinese generals who took the book and edited it themselves. I have doubts if ANY of it is from Sun Tzu.

yeah that book is solid cover to cover war.

Sun Tzu came from the Warring states period in China. There was no such care for "daily living." All of his quotes and rules are about war, because that is what he was born from!

You can't apply his literature to average folk. He is not about average folk. He was an adviser for war in the Wu province. A genius one at that. His entire life was dedicated to war.

Every single chapter is about war. How to advise your men, how to trick the other side, how to approach a city, how to cut supply lines, how to launch an attack, how to ambush, how to handle government, how to handle commanders and generals, how to stop people from defecting, how to higher morale. Anyone who read the book beyond these really vague quotes would see that it is just a rule to war; and a very in depth one indeed. He just jots downs the dos and don'ts.

You can't really say that in a book with the opening being, "If a squad of soldiers are ineffective, do you kill the commandeer, or disband the soldiers" has any type of meaning to average people.

It is best to view the book as a manual than an actual guide to living.

If you do like quotes about war. I highly recommend reading about the Sengoku Jidai period in Japanese history. There are plenty and all of them are extremely interesting.

"If they give you ruled paper, write the other way."

-Juan Ramon Jimenez (from inside cover of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury"

"Anonymity in the world of men is better than fame in heaven, for what is heaven? what is earth? All in the mind"

-Jack Kerouac "On the Road

I bought The Art of War to read but it's been so overused in corporate America that I can't help but groan and murmur general vulgarities at it's citation sometimes.

I agree. I think it is overused by people who try to act like they are some type of genius in war. Or that it gives some type of life lessons.

Nit-picking quotes from the book, completely ignoring its purpose.

The book is a tribute to Sun Tzu's time in the Wu province. It is to pass on his legacy and thoughts as a adviser in times of war. Its a reference book, and manual for generals. And has been bombarded with other random generals who add their input and edited the book.

I for one dislike the citation. It is overused.

"It appears you have given no great store for this two footed animal, you have given him so many enemies and so little defense. So many maladies with so few remedies. So many passions with so little wisdom"

Plato's Dream-Voltraire

Can't find my copy and I've seen several translations. That is as I remember my version and one of my favorites ever.

I sure love war quotes. And although not a general, I deal with war both at work and for hobbies. Also, this game is about combat, so it feels appropriate :-) After Sun Tzu and his "Art of War", the most famous book about war must be "On War" by Carl von Clausewitz.

I'm reminded of a quote from Kissinger to Nixon which could sometimes be used in Avonmora.

"Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you"

There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands.
