The captains were a hard choice to figure out, as I had a theme I set which was: have shown their ability in battle, with 1 or more different ways apparent. This includes ship stealing abilities, port retention and stealing skills, guild warfare, and, to some degree, notoriety for it.
Many of the previous captains had all of these characteristics, so finding more with this criteria was a bit difficult.. I approached Jim Hawkins, Admiral Nelson, Tom Lowe, dmanwuzhere, EdwardTeach, Lordav, Taylor, Danik, Wally, DTT, Argonaut, And SilverShadow, as well as our current selected 5 captains. I didn’t want to choose myself as much as possible, as I didn’t see it very subtle to auto make myself a captain. After consulting a few of these players, I tried to find a back-up Captain, but none could guarantee a defined YES to do it, in case what happened last draft were to occur, so I made the decision to be the back up captain. I didn’t want a backup captain or a regular captain to have been a captain in the past.
I did not consult the other captains in the selection process, however I did consult Meliva and a few other players for advice on a theme for the picks the captains had to follow, as well as a few rules to spice up the actual draft itself. That’s where you may have noticed the first rule on the spoiler, where the first few rounds couldn’t be picked 5 previous times in the draft. This was a flexibility rule I consulted the captains, as well as Dez, Haron, and Mel. Haron originally came to me out of the blue with an idea to get different players picked as a suggestion rather the same ole SHM and CDV always picked. I took that idea and consulted with the captains and staff, and after some good discussion and math, we came to the idea of that lil spicy rule. This allowed some new variety, while not also restricting the captains picks too much.
Also, these captains have a theme for their picks. I also consulted a few outside players and volunteers, and refined it to a more vague theme, to allow players to get creative with their picks.
I didn’t want to blatantly announce or give away the draft, as it was meant to be a surprise. Shadow had real life get in the way, and most of the player base believed the draft to be halted or stopped completely. I wanted to surprise the community with the news. If I had announced earlier, I wouldn’t have been able to pull off a surprise as much as I could have.
