You are underestimating how much damage a nuke will do. In a city like LA, most of the people will die if it is hit. Not to mention that the people who survive will most likely have birth-defective children.

Honestly I think that we should defuse and get rid of all our nukes. They aren't good for destroying militarily bases, they aren't used for bombing terrorist headquarters. They are used for killing innocent people. Especially the ones that the US has. I saw an estimate saying that if we were to nuke anywhere in the US with one of our own, up to 200M people would die. That's nearly 2/3 of the country. If we were to nuke a military base in China, it would also kill millions of other people. Also we have over 5,000 nukes. Why do we have so many? When would we ever need 5,000 nukes?

I'm not denying a nuke would be devastating. I'm saying that you are exaggerating. You said, a nuke would kill everyone in LA. Not any nuke NK has.

You see, a nuke is deadly enough and dangerous enough that you really do not need to exaggerate how bad it would be to get hit by one. IT would not wipe out an entire city, some folks would survive, as would some buildings. Depending on the nuke, where it hit, the city and other factors of course.

We have so many nukes because of the arms race with Russia. Who have about the same amount. I'd be perfectly fine and willing to get rid of them all, so long as Russia did as well. Unfortunately neither side would trust the other to do so. Would be nice if all nukes were removed, but it ain't gonna happen.

Though to be fair, they do make a wonderful deterrent. If everyone is afraid of declaring war cause of Mutually assured destruction, in a funny way, that's one way to try to get world peace.

Course, if anyone is dumb or crazy enough to launch that first nuke, well, at least humans won't be around to hurt the planet after that .

Morbid jokes and pessimism aside, I truly do hope no nuclear wars ever happen. Not in my lifetime, or afterwards. I may not have anyone who I truly care about coming after me to worry about, but as much as I may dislike a lot about humanity, I'd rather we not wipe ourselves out in such a stupid way.

I'm just imagining the next intelligent life form on Earth after us 3,000,000 years from now finding our fossils and concluding how we ended ourselves by blowing ourselves up. They could have a good laugh, so long as they are physically capable

30-40 nukes estimated now. Their ability to reliably hit us-low, our defenses-not sure on that point. A war now would, ideally end with all their nukes hitting the ocean. In fact, if we could act fast, we could potentially destroy their launching sites, and keep any nukes from firing.

That's just nuclear devices. Not necessarily deployable weapons on a missile.

Well those rock rains were not created by the process I was referring to. I forgot to be a bit more specific when saying raining rocks is impossible on Earth. I was referring to rocks going through the same process water does, and falling back as rain. So unless somewhere on earth it got so hot that rocks melted, evaporated, turned to rock clouds, cooled, then rained back down as solid rocks, it is impossible for that to happen on earth(as it is now.)

All the cases of when rocks come from the sky is always the result of either strong winds carrying them, volcanic eruption, meteors, or local trouble makers and drunkards.

Again, apologies for not being specific with what I meant by "raining rocks' I did not mean simply rocks "raining down" regardless of how. I meant for rocks to rain the same way rain happens. There is a planet where that process does happen. It's very fascinating.

Volcanic Eruptions. The rocks just aren't very big. Ash clouds can carry the rocks pretty far away.

Hmm. Perhaps volcanoes, can heat a rock enough that it turns to a gas and back. But it doesn't make rock clouds like I mentioned. So I still wouldn't count it.

Arn't ash clouds not rocks just more dust and other particles? I know a lot of things can be made into ash, maybe rocks too, not sure on that honestly.

but the planet COROT-7B is what I mean by raining rocks. Volcanoes might come close to that, but not exactly the same.
