Yeah kansas has some salt mines. Even got a large salt museum apparently goes over 600 feet underground. Honestly aside from it being a musuem, it would be a fine place to store waste. Putting waste in old abandoned mines is honestly a nice sounding idea. Just makes sure it's properly sealed so no animals can get in and kill themselves. Could even collapse the entrance or lock it up nice and tight, so no one and no animal wanders in.

seal it in concrete :) I heard a great theoretical disposal idea once, seal the bad waist in high pressure drums and i think it was salt water friendly concrete, and then drop the waist in one of the trenches in the ocean. The reason it was a cool idea is the trenches are subduction zones and the waist would, over thousands of years slip under a continental plate. Even if it leaked fissile material, the water would negate any radiation. Once again, just an idea.

Envirotards would freak out with that idea.

Is this supposed to be your way of saying it's a bad idea, or a good idea? Have you yourself read this report?

I just skimmed over it, and it apparently seems to suggest it is indeed a good idea to put waste into salt mines. It lists some problems we need to overcome but that's an issue we would have with any suggestions. Some problems would be present in any suggestion.

What? I don't recall saying salt domes were a bad solution? - I agree with pretty much anything that works to protect the entire global eco systems...without them there is nothing.

I have read the report. A number of times. By your own admission - you scanned it.

Did I say you thought it was a bad idea? No, I asked you a very simple question. You just randomly posted a link to a very long document, with absolutely no context given. Hell, looking at the link alone you don't even know what it's going to lead to, aside from it being a gov site and the word book.

So I had no idea what the point of you posting that link was for. So I asked. I then asked if you yourself have read the report, and then stated that it agreed with the idea of putting waste into salt mines.

If you had took the time to write a quick single sentence or 2 along with the link, you would have saved us both a lot of time. But considering you apparently spend time re-reading very long and lengthy reports, it seems that you don't value your time as much as I value mine. Which is why I skimmed a very lengthy document of a topic that I don't have a major interest in.

If you had took ( took the time?) the time to write a quick single sentence or 2 along with the link, you would have saved us both a lot of time. But considering you apparently spend time re-reading very long and lengthy reports,

>>> Hmm...another put-down. How would you assume to know how much I value my time? That's just rude.

Which is why I skimmed a very lengthy document of a topic that I don't have a major interest in.

>>> So..if I have this right...are you saying that your time is too valuable to read documentation to further your knowledge on a subject you say have little interest in but are willing to make broad, uninformed comments? You will only read about, research further, discuss and approve of what interests you ?
I'm sure I've read this somewhere before earlier in this thread...maybe I have misunderstood you again?

I even watched it Dez...there was a lot...alooottt of talking over the top of one another including the mediator...so it was often difficult to actually hear what either were saying for most of the time

I think that we should use a hybrid of wind, sun and nuclear energy so that if one fails we will have two others to back us up while we fix the problem.

I don't think we should dump nuclear waste in Antarctica, but rather defuse it and recycle it.

Fukushima and Chernobyl are outliers. Safety protocols protect nuclear power from having a disaster like Chernobyl, a disaster of such is unlikely to happen. Fukushima was built on a fault line on the ocean in the 1960s-1970s, prior to Chernobyl. The safety protocals learned from Chernobyl and 3-Mile Island have drastically increased safety for nuclear power. Fukushima was a matter of poor design location. Nuclear power is the the safest, most cost efficient, and most reliable power generation out there.

yeah most of the newer nuclear plants if it goes critical the computer will try and shut it down because it's programmed to instead of panicked humans trying not to run away trying to figure out the problem

Second, Dman - Great songs!!! That cracked me up! It reminded me i need to buy more nine line :)

Lastly, Zeph - Im with you, i think Nuclear is the way to go, and I love your point about salt domes! If memory serves waste fissile material has a half life of 500 years ish, so that would be a great remedy, so long as we used something other than steel barrels :D

The issue I have with Antartica is that its the last real whole land mass that hasn't been molested. Now granted the ice will NEVER! melt away until the land mass itself moves north but, its got a nerdy place in my heart :D

Edit : Kim your right on! Fusion would be the answer, there is no radio active waist left over just heaver elements, woohoo! But we cant do it yet and maintain a stable reaction, maybe sometime in the future. And dont talk about cold fusion yet, lets get fusion first :)

Blue, the idea of shooting crap into space is a great idea too but... remember a long time ago i brought up, you cant just solve the problem, you have to solve the problem your fix makes for it to be a good fix? The amount of fuel needed to get at all this material to space would be huge! They use some of the heaviest materials on the planet to get that nuclear reaction. How you gonna launch all those rockets with the green new deal :D

I thought we can already do nuclear fusion it's just that at the moment we only have a few fusion reactors for science and the nuclear fusion produces a bit less energy than it takes to make the reaction so we are putting in more energy to get less. Also fusion won't have a devestating effect like a fission reactor would have if there was a problem.
