this can be costly if you are willing to try to fight back against a player that is more advanced...........though i am hoping revenge will be a dish best served cold

Fighting in this game is costly no matter what except in very rare cases. But a few things that can help is to wait for a good time to strike, find others with a grudge against them to help you, or try to manipulate things into others doing you're work for you.

Or just let things go and move on. All have pro's and cons. Especially the manipulation strategy. I wouldn't recommend that honestly as should you be found out, well you're gonna have a lot more enemies to deal with.

Side note, weird place to bring up revenge, as this is a forum game, but hope that advice helps.
