Yes. Joining a guild is not only important - it's neccessary. You will not stand a chance without one as a fresh player. Certain STRONG players may be able to do well even without a guild, but they already know all the important stuff. And even for them, it can be very risky to live without a guild (there are some weird exceptions, but usually a guild is a benefit also for the strongest players).
And that is also the answer to how to save yourself from strong players: Use your guild. They will help you, one way or another. Maybe by advicing you, maybe by talking to that "strong" player, or maybe by helping you strike back. You cannot handle strong players alone as a new player (which should be rather obvious in pretty much any game).
I am a guildmaster, and when I joined, there were several guilds. So I joined one. Later, I became in charge of that guild.
Shadowood is another guildmaster. He started in Helm. From there, he joined another, smaller guild. After that, he finally decided to start his own guild, and got several players to join him in creating that guild.
So yes. Joining a guild is a must.
