Gold Resource is fully functional right now BUT there is nowhere to be found.
This update is part of our next major feature as requested by the Playerbase here and as described here.

Not really noticing the Fame bonus, and my upkeep was very low to start with so the change isn't much. Pirates didn't really get anything but more reasons to be attacked

Might I suggest a larger fame bonus or maybe some fame loss reduction?

Regarding today's update (March 2, 2013):

Our plan is to slowly add more functionality to the Tavern page, starting with the Top Helpers voting feature. And there is more.
So we have created a new page which will serve all ranking stats, instead of Tavern.

In short words, the BEST way to access ranking stats, is to click your FAME indication.

You can still do this through tavern, but it will take an extra click.

Yes! Good! I'm really glad starting players will have enough resources to make their first ship once they figure out how to trade for gold. That's a step in the right direction for making PG more newcomer-friendly!

in the change log you mentioned upgrading the tutorial so i started the tutorial all over again
in the third tutorial they tell you this
(You earn fame points by earning gold and winning naval battles!)
how are we supposed to earn fame by gold

You earn fame points by using gold in fact. This always happened. I have updated it to mention "using" instead of "earning".
