More things to do, faster growth and development, more ability to experiment and see the results more quickly. Everyone complains about the slow start on these games. When I find a new game I want to play with it. The pirate theme and voodoo cards were enough to interest me but the amount of game play time involved during my first sitting was not enough to either satisfy my desire to play a game or hook me well enough to insure a return visit to the game. (Demographically, I'm a 37 year old American male.) The more play time I get on a game during that first sitting, the more I feel personally involved with the game. If I've been satisfied on day one then I'll definitely be back on day two. And the sooner I can return to the game the better because I've had less time to get distracted with something else. So day one is the key to getting me back on day two.

My though would be to start players with 400 turns initially, give each new player one voodoo card that costs zero turns to cast and gives 200 turns (call it "Youthful Energy" or something), and, lastly, let players earn 1 turn every five minutes for the first seven days. Effectively this would cut start-up time for new players in half, while dramatically increasing the amount of time spent playing during the first day or two, and shortening the period of time between a new player's early game sessions causing them to become more personally involved.

My only other idea would be something like trial guest accounts that let new players experiment with the game outside of their actual account would give people a platform to play and experiment while they wait through eight to ten days of start-up. This might be a way to do tutorial quests.

Not sure if it's worth anything but that's the best input I can think to add at the moment.

I'm not new here but I can tell you one thing that will run off a new player if they learn it. There is a distinct advantage to having credits and a player gets none if they don't pay. All players should earn a credit for each calendar day that they play. That will get them off to a better start if they are new. Turns are very important to every aspect of actual game-play and credits can enhance turns. It is very unfair for a player to have to pay for every credit. There will always be players who will buy extra credits but just one credit for each calendar day a player is active is not too much to ask. Even if we all got 5 credits for a single day of activity, I would still have bought more. Reward players for playing. It will have some effect on whether a new player takes interest. And a start-up amount of 15 credits along with an explanation of what they are good for, couldn't hurt.
Yesterday I gave my all. Today I'll give more. Tomorrow, I'll take back what you took for granted.

as a new player, it hasn't been hard to figure out how to make gold, without ever viewing a tutorial or asking a question, nor do i feel the need to join a guild to figure out how to play. that actually annoys me. i'm not fond of the seeming insistence on guild membership. i'm tolerating the merchant necessity of the beginning, but it is the pirate aspect of the game that is appealing. that and the voodoo cards. those are a nice touch. i won't presume to make suggestions right now. i may come back and add my two cents worth at a later point.

Indeed, the guilds don't seem necessary in the beginning. But guilds see you as important most probably. Have you got any invitations yet ?

lucky for you, this particular wench has a decent sense of humor, and i was not offended in the slightest. indeed, i even chuckled a bit.

thank you for not sending an invitation. i have had several, but so far, i've just deleted them all. i can accept the possible need in the future for a guild, i suppose. however, i suspect i will be highly reluctant to dabble in them, until the need is fairly pressing. they seem...restrictive...in a way.

(eta: and yes, wenches is the correct plural. ;) )

hey, im not that new to the game but just wanted to say when i first joined i didn't see the tutorial link thing o i just when and clicked random buttons and tried to figure out what to do. I got stuck very quickly as i didnt know how to move. So i click on the help button or something and it said to watch tutorials. i couldnt find tutorials for like 10mins but when i did find them found them incredibly boring and didnt watch them. so i went back to clicking buttons, i found the map and everything so it was all good but i did get attacked a few times cause i wasn't being cautious enough. i found my guild really helpful cause they answered all my questions and useful guild forums. At first it was hard getting gold but once i got howkers i was getting a fair bit of money. But the only way to get alot of fame is to start doing NPC fights. i got +40k fame in a days just using a sloops and sloop of war.
I'm a canny one
Scourge of the Seven Seas
Sink anyone's galleon
To murder my enemies
Whether he's been stabbed in a back street
Or a vast sea attack by the Black Flag fleet
