Once again THE CONSULTANT has consulted:

Image

" If John starts, he'll fire at Jack. At a 100% hit rate, Jack will be dead. It is now Jim's turn. He will try to kill John, with a 50% chance of success.
If Jack starts, he'll fire at John. At 80% hit rate, it's now a 80% chance that he'll kill John, and 20% chance that he'll miss. If he misses, then John will kill Jack, and as before, Jim and John each has a 50% chance to survive.

CDV is right; it's 52.22%

You can break it down. Since Jim will deliberately miss if both Jack and John are still alive, Jack and John each has a 50% chance at firing first.
If John fires first, Jim has a 50% chance of hitting him. If he misses, he's dead. So this contributes 50% x 50% = 25% to Jim's survival chance.

If Jack fires first, there's a 20% chance he misses, which will effectively lead to John killing Jack, and we get the situation above again. 50% (probability of Jack going first) x 20% (probability that Jack misses John) x 50% (probability that Jim kills John) = 5% is the contribution from this path.

Finally, If Jack fires first, there's an 80% probability that he kills John. That means Jim gets to fire at Jack. We have a 50% x 80% = 40% chance of ending in this situation. Let's call the probability that Jim wins this duel for P. He can win on the first shot (50% chance), or he can miss (50% chance), and then Jack misses (20% chance), and then there's Jim's turn again, back to the same situation with probability P. So P = 50% + 50% x 20% x P, or 0.9xP = 0.5, giving P = 55,56%. Multiply this by the 40% chance of ending in this situation, and this path contributes 40% x 55.56% = 22.22%.

Add it up: 25% + 5% + 22.22% = 52.22%. Congrats to CDV!

BUT WAIT ~ THERE'S MORE!

If you wish, we can revive Jack, John and Jim for a new duel. This time, however, everyone is a crack shot, and has a 100% chance of hitting their mark. They can still deliberately miss, though. Also, they now only have six bullets each.

All of this is common knowledge among Jack, John and Jim. When they draw the order in which they are to fire, it ends up Jack first, John second and Jim third. They get to fire one and only one shot before the next pirate fires, and they continue until they run out of bullets or until there is only one pirate left standing. Each pirate wants to survive, but he also wants the other pirates dead.
They all hate each other equally much.

What will be the outcome of this duel?

Jack and John will survive.

No one will shoot one another for the first 5 rounds. As the first person to shoot the other, will be killed by the next shooter.

On the last 3 bullets, If Jack shoots, John or Jim, which ever wasn't shot will kill Jack. So Jack will purposely miss which guarantees him to live, as John will not shoot Jack, as shooting Jack will allow Jim to kill John. So John will shoot Jim to ensure that John survives leaving 2 men Jack and John alive and no more bullets.

Ahoy there folks... MIAB received a belated message from the Consultant who say ..

Just wanted you to know - Dez did NOT get the second three-way duel right!

The reason is: Jim knows this is going to happen. He realizes that if the duel goes to the last round, he will die while both the others will live. Since he is going to die anyway, and he wants the others dead, he will take one of them with him. So at some point BEFORE the last round, he will shoot either Jack or John (50% probability for each). Then the other guy will shoot him. So both Jack and John have a 50% chance of surviving, but one and only one of them will survive. :o:

This is posted to provide the correct answer and not to embarrass anyone. It is my fault for assuming Dez had it right bc I really wouldnt know! lol

Apologies .. payouts still stand and again.. thanks for playing! :P

Dez does get the duel right because Jim shooting would fly counter to the notion that each man wants to stay alive.

The Consultant has once again consulted... it would seem he doth not agree with you Dez .. :D
Please keep in mind here I am mere envoy :y lol
Image

Dez is wrong. Jim shooting does not change whether he will survive or not. If he shoots, he will die. If he doesn't shoot, he will die (killed in the last round). Thus it is not counter to his wish to survive. His only choice is whether or not he takes someone with him. And since he wants the others to die, Jim's best choice is to shoot one of the others. Since he hates them equally much, it's equally probable that he will shoot Jack and John.

This effect is often called "kingmaker" in multiplayer games. One player may see that he has no chance of winning the game, yet he can decide which of the other players will win

Your consultant is wrong.

Actions taken that you know will result in your death is directly contrary to the want to live.

Furthermore, the Kingmaker effect is moot here as the scenario states that they want the others dead, but they want to survive. The characters wanting the others to die negates allowing someone they want dead to live, while they themselves die. You can't say that these are the rules and then ignore them in the answer.
