But pirate tales doesn't have any counter to it, aside from mindbar and CCs. Black death has TI, conspiracy has gold and charity donation, your only real counter to pirate tales is to hit them back with it enough times to steal the fame back, which is a very poor counter.

The counter to pirate tales is plunder. There is no defensive card against Cons and BD. There is against Pirate Tales.

when i plunder i usually end up losing more then i gain when people clear my danger which boggles my mind

as they just mentioned, plunder is by no means a good counter against pirate tales. Hell, I think it was Danik who pointed that he would go out with a fleet, win most if not all his battles, and just one loss would wipe out several+wins. Like I said-fame is wonky. I don't fully know it's mechanics-as I said, I don't care enough about it to do so, but I do know it's not a very good system.

And while you can't block BD's or CDs there is voodoo that exists to literally undo whatever damage it causes. And, if you happen to know who is using said voodoo, you can always do a counter attack and just lock them down. Port voodoo typically comes in waves, pirate tales Is usually just a few quick casts and you're done.

Fame gain/loss in combat is specifically structured to penalise players with less than 200 ships. The benefit of such a structured penalty has never been adequately explained.
So, currently, for me : one battle loss = minus 3,410,490 fame.
Cos having fewer than 200 ships has got to be discouraged. Apparently.
