i don't disagree with your idea, i just would like to understand what is the purpose behind your concept ? i mean, what do you want to see new ?

a problem i see with merchant ships is that they all have an advantage and a disadvantage every time
LMM have a smaller cargo than trade galleons but travel faster
trade galleons have a bigger cargo but travel slower than LMM
large fluyts have a smaller cargo than trade galleons but cost less than them
... and so on

If now you say that in a fleet you can have 5 LMM but 8 trade galleons, you would overpower the trade galleons cause they would trade more (example) and at the end of the day having much more profits than LMM. I mean, we risk to change all the merchant ships hierarchy.

The problem on military ships would be - according to me - that again i don't see the purpose. Would maybe a fleet of 10 sloops destroy a fleet of 5 sotl ? if no, i don't see the change with the actual system.
and the second problem would be, if (for example) we say that a fleet can contain 5 sotl OR 8 large frigates or 10 sloops
if we keep the ratio, 1 sotl occupies as much space as 1.6 large friates or 2 sloops
so how would you code the space occupied in the fleet, in case you mix ships ?
a fleet with 5 sotl ?
4 sotl + 1 sloop as a tail ? or could we make then 4 sotl + 2 sloops ?
or 3 sotl + 3 large frigates ? or 2 sotl + 3 large frigates + 2 sloops ?

again, if 4 sotl + 1 sloop will kill every other combination of ships in a fleet, i don't see the purpose of coding this new suggestions. Now, if we change totally the system of war and we add bonuses as in a system of rock-paper-scissor (ex. sloop has a bonus if attacking sotl, large frigate has a bonus on sloop, sotl has a bonus on large frigate, ...), in that case, mixing ships in a fleet would be useful and strategically interesting. If the enemy always makes sotl, maybe adding some sloops with an attacker bonus against sotl could be interesting.

The point, of course, would be to make them roughly comparable. A fleet of fluyts could make the same profit as a fleet of LMM, and similarly, you could attack a fleet of sotls with frigates. It's just to broaden tactics and enable the use of more ship types. Now the fact that some are cheaper is irrelevant (other than as tail) because everyone has the money to buy trade galleons or elms...
You can do the same with new individual ship traits, or with new voodoo, but the latter is already too powerful in my opinion.

Well my flag galleon and frigate fleets have beat SOTLs before just have to be smart with placement and get tech upgrades

Just an FYI.

If you have an idea, even though it may relate to the topic in some way, post your own thread for it. In the grand scheme of things, suggestions are to be only about the suggestion presented in the First Post. The follow up comments and discussion are to provide feedback on the suggestion, whether it be critiques/improvements or the like/dislike of the suggestion. Alternate ideas should be posted in their own suggestion, as posting them in another's topic, will likely result in the idea and post to be overlooked and ignored.
