You need to combine fleets carrying immigrants profits + plantations profit to calculate the actual profit of a plantation. Because a fleet working for the plantation generates profit at the one side of the travel.

well i have a hard time including the one side of the trade rout as plantation profit seeing as though if i didnt have a plantation that rout would be even more profitable on that one side than it is.. so to me its still a loss, then the gold bars invested and i know most dont pay the 15 mil for the opperating permissions because the biggest platations around could bearly make that back in a month.. so it dont make sence that a small one cant profit you have to go big or not at all

Finding the balance is key.

Obviouly huge plantations can pay off your permissions faster. Huge plantation eat gold bar at disturbing rate, if you let them. A small plantation requires less gold bar investment to get stabalized.

My most successful plantation was 500 acres.
It had substantial building improvements and was operating fairly effieciently.

My personal suggestion for a quick start up is to start off with a plantation larger than you need. This will allow you to allocate more acres towards building improvement.
Run like this for a month then scale back by reducing acres and firing workers. As you scale back the building improvements will beging to show multiple stars.
