I have followed this tactic in the past. I have given 60pointer SoLs to newcomers. Such a move helps them immensely and the y tend to stick around and learn faster. Also, it is hard to lose the ship. If anyone steals it, you can always reclaim it from them as it is practically yours. Although, some times you end up gifting it to the newcomer.

You aren’t a poor boy, you had a ton of fleets before you left for a while and I know we didn’t raid you dry.
