The man shurgs.

I don't know, but we got some of them as prisoners remember? And as I said before, I do not think we can catch those who fled. They have a good headstart already, and we don't have any clue which direction they fled in, so if we just pick a random direction, its likely we end up sailing for months and find nothing, while the pirates get away. Now we COULD split up and try to cover every direction, but that would be incredibly risky, and would probably just end up with the poor suckers who do end up finding them getting caught and killed.

I still suggest you should call this a success, go back, report to your superiors of who you caught, and the lair being burnt down, and see if they give you any new orders. And see if that letter the admiral gave you helps any. Maybe you might get promoted, who knows. But again, as I said before if you do wish to gamble, and just go after them in a random direction ill follow, but it is very, very unlikely we will catch them, and we just end up wasting time. And honestly we should be taking care of the prisoners we got, and deliver them back to be interrogated, tried, and hanged.

The commodore thinks. He looks at the wind.

Those frigates were heavy, quite heavy, they can't be extremely far. I know which way they went, from this wind they could only have gone from one way, west, that's the fastest way, the only other way they could go quickly on this tack would lead them right into a fleet and there is common knowledge that that fleet is there so I am almost perfectly certain that they went this way.

The captain sighs and decides to take his word for it. Though he does say just because that's the fastest way doesn't mean the pirates went that way. He and his frigate follow James west, and after nearly a month of sailing find nothing. A small scout ship is spotted nearby and states that no ships had come by this way in weeks. The captain sighs and calls to James

Well mate, we took the gamble and lost. Your superiors probably want to get a report by now. And even if not, there's no way we can find and catch those that fled now.

Just then a man in the maintop calls:

Sail ho!

The commodore calls back:

Where away?

the sailor calls back:

2 points abaft starboard beam sir!

The commodore looks through a telescope, unsure of what it is.

It wasn't a damn gamble sir, they're going on the fastest wind to get away from the largest force. I'll not turn back now, I'll track them by God, I'll chase them to hell and back. And it appears the scout ship has not been looking around properly, that dog over there, is hiding a sail, a large one.

The commodore puts down his telescope.

And if that's not then then by God I know where he'll go next, I know how to track pirates, I know how to hunt any man, no matter where he bloody is. There's a chance that they only got here hours ago, that they were forced on another tack for a awhile and had to move. BEAT TO QUARTERS!
Both frigates sail towards the ship in the fog, their gun ports opened

No jack, the pirates didn't head west. just because that is the fastest way does not mean they took that path. They assumed that the hunters would expect them to go the fastest path, and so they went the opposite. In fact, why would they bother going the fastest path, if the hunters could STILL catch up to them if they did so? Defeats the purpose of going the fast route.

They would go that way because that's the way they are least likely to be caught on, it's not a matter of knowing EXACTLY whether one will be caught, its going the way which one will least LIKELY be caught, seamanship is required, knowing when to haul in or loose sail. Also, I imagined them to be in such a position, that if I he pirates came that way they'd still be spotted.

The pirates didn't head west, because the pirates made a good assumption. If their ships are so heavy and slow that even if they take the fastest winds that the hunters could catch up, then speed won't help them, so they would need to go a direction that the hunters would not expect them to go, and that by the time the hunters realize which way they went, they could never catch up. Ergo, if they assumed the hunters would expect them to go west, they would go east. And none of the hunters would be able to spot them doing so, As I mentioned before, they had a pretty good head start. And if you couldn't spot them by the time you reached the lair, you wouldn't spot them period after going the opposite direction they went

Theyre actually not any heavier than the hunters or the Royal Navy, and the RN ships are slightly damaged, so yes speed would certainly help. Also when I said that they wouldn't make good time, it means they're not fast by tall ship standards, so technically by the time they'd get under way, no matter what direction they went in, they'd be visible. But You know what? Have it your way, I don't care, do what you like. I'll change my post, you happy?

The commodore looks to bob coldly, he says in a slightly angry voice

I'm an officer in his magesty's navy! I' don't remember calling you "mate" this whole time, it's quite improper, you will refer to me as Commodore, or sir, got it? If those pirates aren't here, I know where they'll be next...

Sorry, I was rather angry. I just feel as if I get shot down a lot.

if your gonna be like that this rp is done. In fact, I think I could use a break. Be back with a new one in a week. And mind your tone next time.

Bob looks at him. and scowls.

well MATE, I ain't one of the men serving under you, and I'm not one of your navy butt-buddies, I'm here cause the admiral asked me to help your sorry ass out cause he figured you needed it, and the old codger is a good man so I obliged him. If you want to waste your time hunting them down you can do it on your bloody own. Me and my men are heading back, and I suggest you learn some respect for blokes who help you out for free.

Bob and his frigate, and the other frigate the admiral left behind begin sailing back to port. The scout ship goes with them and leave James alone.

If anyone wants to keep this going they can, but I won't be posting in this one anymore, I will be taking a break from RP for a while.
