how do you achieve attributes beyond 60? isn't 60 the max? 6 items at 10 points each. please enlighten me.

60 is the max you can "attribute" a ship because 10 for each attribute. You can store more into the ship though

Do the "over" points (those >60) give the ship any advantage? Do they act as a buffer against loss of level due to battle?

They can be defense against Sabotage cards somewhat
