New cards? How about culling some old ones?

Postby Qwerty00172 » Tue May 02, 2017 1:49 am

There are a lot of ideas on here for new voodoo. And its always interesting reading.
How about culling some that are rarely, if ever, used?
They are easy to spot. You can buy 50 of them at the card market for one credit. And there is no interest.

Indeed : RFA and Emergency Call are of no use to the non-brig owner : but are a valuable asset for those who do sail them : one problem is that the chances of getting any particular common card are the same : so less popular cards, like Dutch India Company, turn up as often as the more widely useful ones like English India Company. The same applies to uncommon and rare cards : Hired Diplomat has an uncommon usage : its very specific and necessary for that task but is not needed that often whereas Master Craftsmen is always useful and in demand.
I'd be wary of discontinuing existing cards unless it can be shown they serve NO purpose at all, or can be easily replaced by other means, such as techs.
As for the '50 cards for a penny' syndrome : that wont go away as long as all cards have that equal chance of being selected for presents or booster packs. Its the flip side of certain cards having a very high value due to higher demand, like Mindbars.

Even better suggestion, instead of the new cards, we just use the existing cards. How much more voodoo do we need?

Even without new voodoo new strategies will be developed.

Even better suggestiom, instead of the new cards and using the existing cards, we remove all voodoo that is considered worthless (voodoo where 20 goes for 1 cred) and change the statistics so rare becomes rarer since the common voodoos will be more valuable

Personally, I think about 90% of voodoo cards should go away, but that isn't going to happen without a major revision to game mechanics and a whole lot of bitching.

Your suggestion, as well as the OP's, are horrible for the below reason:

one of the problems in removing voodoo is what happens to the players who have the voodoo card being removed? is it removed from them also? if so then they deserve some sort of compensation. If they get to keep it, that may eventually make the removed voodoo a kind of collectors item, like a REALLY old ship.

Not really a problem. They have removed voodoo before. Admins just remove it from the presents and booster packs. You can use it as long as you have it, there just isn't anymore new cards circulated.

As well, I don't think they are going to remove voodoo unless its actions are contrary to the games direction.
