At a quick note (so I might miss things), key changes are:
-Ships Market
-Credits Exchange
-Shipwreck Hunting
-Royal Stipends

For a newcomer, the most important of all are the Royal Stipends: Joining the nation that offers the best stipends for newcomers (You should look up to Captain rank mostly) is considered one of the top moves.

Credits exchange, once you see where the price usually stand, is a feature that awards activity. You can make millions per day once you can reach the full capacity (no bank - 50M, 25M in gold and 25M in credits).

Ships Market can be used to build ships faster. You save on turns and materials that you would otherwise need to carry. The deals at the market if you combine all costs, are better than if you build them yourself (not always). You could arrange a deal through the tavern with other players for bundle purchase of Howkers perhaps, on a low price surely.

Shipwreck Hunting is not really viable for a newcomer.

If you still play by day 3, you are in a guild and you like the game, consider buying credits. There will be no better moment to buy credits than when you are a newcomer. Not only for the newcomer packs but because the great boost credits can give early on.

But what is good and who is good lol. I think there is a lot of variable in this. I want to learn specific game elements and I think there is probably certain guilds that are better at certain things.

In my opinion the best guilds to join when you first start would be one of the training guilds. HELM or SSAA. I think SSTG is a training guild as well but I'm not 100% sure on that. but joining a training guild will teach you the basics and from there you can decide where to go. I also recommend that if your new to NEVER create your own guild until your more established. a good guild teaches you and helps protect you. and its highly recommended if you plan to start your own guild to find 2-3 other players to join you in creating it to have a solid start.

Is there any value in becoming a pirate as opposed to ranking with a nation?

Is there a good place I can read more information on how to build wealth through credit exchange?

I already bought some credits and bought the newbie packs and will continue to purchase them as necessary.

I have a bad habit of just applying to all top guilds when I join a game without doing much research first lol

I always advice everyone to do what creates more excitement to them. Listening on advice from old salty sea dogs is good but taking their path is a really bad idea.

All long term players here -myself included- and I dare say the successful ones, all play particular roles or have specific objectives. As you said, the games does not pushes you anywhere; it is your choice.

On your questions:
-----

A pirate is the most exciting role in this game. You don't need to play safe so excitement is at 100%. You can do what you like and no one can really harm you. The bad thing is that you will receive lots of hate AND when you are pretty clueless, you will end up broke. Choosing a middle ground at first (joining a guild like MerC or VUDU) is your best starting point if you like fighting.

Now if you only care for the flag, I would say to avoid it as a lowbie (the next rank after newbie). For newbs and veterans its okay. For all the rest, it is better to have a nation. Still, it is mostly a matter of taste and preference.

Regarding credits exchange, I am now writing a guide :D
