Without it, the election would be decided by the most populated parts of the country, leaving the more sparsely populated areas unrepresented. Just as every state has two senators regardless of population while representatives based on population, the electoral college combines the two. Without the electoral college, the country would always elect a president based on the desires of New York and California. The voter turn out in the rest of the country would be even more dismal than it is and would result a situation that was similar to one of the reasons for the revolution in the first place, taxation without representation.

Popular vote is in fact represented by the electoral college as population does factor in to the number of electoral votes a state has:

Each State is allocated a number of Electors equal to the number of its U.S. Senators (always 2) plus the number of its U.S. Representatives (which may change each decade according to the size of each State's population as determined in the Census).

The wisdom of this is a testament to the consideration of the founders of our country, the form and function of the political system works, if only we had participants that were equal to the task. I would only suggest one change, an option to select a "none of the above" candidate which would have been appropriate especially this last election cycle.

To not vote abrogates our responsibility as a citizen. It neuters your arguments about the outcome.

the problem I have with it, is if I vote democrat, and Kansas goes to republican, all the electorates go to the republican. even if 49% of the votes are democrat, all those amount to nothing because its a winner take all system. I would be much more inclined to vote, if it wasn't a winner take all system. as it stands now I have no real interest in politics. as I said I have a defeatist attitude about voting in my state, and if I were to decide to start voting then id have to spend time following politics so I wouldn't be an uneducated voter, and id rather spend that time either relaxing or doing some other activity.
but I will admit we do have a great system. isn't perfect but nothing is, but it could be much worse.

some states have it so that its spilt in how many votes to electors. Others don't have it split that way.

only Nebraska and maine don't have winner take all. so that's 2 states out of 50. which is a rather large difference honestly

ohio was thinking about implementing it but we are such a weird state that it wouldn't work the cities are usually democrat and the less urban area's are usually republican or flipped depends on the day.

The rural/urban split is more lopsided than it was at the founding, for sure. The electoral college may have run its course as a usefull institution, especially if its not allow to make separate decision from state vote totals.

The whole issue though is huge and complex and wouldn't support changing it for a couple results I don't like, maybe it will save us someday from another populist.

In a related note, I live in Maine with a divided electoral college vote and I think it sucks. I live in the Trump part which is why I knew all along he would win. If you took the state as a whole, though, he loses in a landslide...

Do you have a view on the current Presidential Order and the fall-out from it : it is worrying to see the administration so quick to sack dissenting voices amid claims of 'disloyalty' : its an undue pressure on what is supposed to be an independent judicial system whose loyalty should be to the law itself, not the ideology of the incumbent. I suppose those who dont 'get with the program' will be got rid of on similar grounds : What next? Loyalty oath with your fries?

I've been terrified of Trump since he denounced Obama as a secret muslim, I signed a boycott petition at the time against NBC and later Macy's.

Only one happy is Nixon, he's not going to be the example of "Bad Corrupt President" anymore.

No, I'm seriously building a fallout shelter. I don't see impeachment in the cards, repuglicans are too spineless.

The other scenarios are terrifing as well.

Best case scenario? He goes all TR on us a disapears into the desert of texas to build an ugly expensive wall, but we don't see much of him.
