I am pleased to see USA making positive steps again. Three cheers and a barrel of Egypt's finest rum to celebrate this occasion.

So if the US is good now, does that mean the civil war is done and Lincoln has been killed? What a loss to republicans, eh Chin? Since you believe that he wasn't one. Which he was. Hehe. Haha. Hoohoo.

funny thing is, while Lincoln was a republican at some point later on the ideals of democrats and republicans sorta switched.
granted Lincoln was one of the best presidents we had. along with the Roosevelts, Washington, Jefferson etc.
worst one I can think of is Hoover.

Mel is right, the parties kinda switched around. And just so everyone's clear on Lincoln, he never actually freed any slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves that were owned by citizens of states who had left the union. Since those states did not answer to United States laws nothing actually happened. It would be like if England tried to pass a law saying the US had to pay British taxes. We wouldn't actually pay the taxes, we would just be pissed off. Besides, there were still slaves in Yankee states, and Lincoln himself often said that blacks should not be allowed citizenship. In his views blacks were equal to animals. The Emancipation Proclamation was a political snub against the south and had no real effect.

Yeah, no. The ideals never switched. That's a common misconception due to a couple things. Most people think that the Democrats were the front runners of the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement and a lot of changes in regards to removing the racial divide (desegregation) were started during the 1950s during the Eisenhower Administration (a Republican). The civil rights bill of 1964 was also initially brought forth during the 1950s under Eisenhower, but the Democrats controlled Congress and killed the Bill. It only passed in '64 because a Democrat was President. It was a purely political move. After the civil rights bill was passed, the Democrat Party proclaimed themselves the protectors of the minorities and poor, yet the party helped found and still is supported by the KKK.

Lincoln probably would be republican by today's standards. He wanted to free slaves, yes, but it was to unify the union and continue capitalism. He grew up poor and through the wage system in America he became successful. Many people say democrats were the fore runners of equality, like Deznutz said, but around the 1930s is when most Africans became democratic because the democrats said, "wait, instead of placing them below us, why don't we act like they are equal and give them all of this stuff that seems good so we get their vote" from the new deal and such. It's the same now with people believing that they are the voice of minorities.
