So, from a practical point of view, for me, different qualities its a non-starter.

Simple to code. Implementation would only take an hour. Even non sophisticated languages can input this.
All you need to do is implement new variables into the code.

Even an OLD language like QB can input this
Ex:
10 : REM GEM GOLD VALUES
GOSUB 100
GemA = 20
GOSUB 200
GemB = 15
GOSUB 300
GemC = 10
GOSUB 400
GemD = 5
GOSUB 400
GemE = 500

30 : REM GEM Container
Gem(Container) = 400

40 : REM GEM COUNT
If GemA = 1 THEN GOSUB 100: GOTO 30: Gem(Container) - 1
If GemB = 1 THEN GOSUB 200: GOTO 30: Gem(Container) - 1
RETURN
GOSUB 5000:
Print "Sorry, you have ran out of Gems!"

100
IF Gem(Container) = 0 THEN GOSUB 5000
RETURN
END
Just repeat after me: "Czar Ivan did not help me win the elections."

It should just be, "Sorry, you don't seem to have any Gems"
"Got ya."

hey mate, don't have time to read this entire thread right now. I am glad you bumped it. I have actually been working on a completely independent Idea that involved gem stones. It involves an interesting way to acquire them, and a system for trading them, that all mimics existing game features, but adds some very strong new play features and strategy. It also involves a new feature that may or may not be easy to implement, but would create an entirely new aspect to the game. I was going to post it and came across this thread yesterday. I am going to read all of it and then see if the 2 ideas will integrate or if mine is to different. Either way I will read all of this and either they will integrate or they will not. and I will be posting my idea in a few days.

ok here is my take it seems to work with a lot of ideas presented here so I am not going to start a different thread

Gem stones - for purpose of value - I suggest Gem stones be found as a chests of Gem stones
- a chest of Gem stones would be high value, move valuable than gold bars

gem stone vary in type - rubys, emeralds, sapphires, pearls, diamonds

there is a gem buyer it is automated not player run
- options from the jem buyer
- sell for gc
- convert to jewlery - requires gold bar also - increases fame
- convert to amulet - require gold bar also - carry for protection - possibly better skirmish escape chance - maybe battle defense -can be lost in
battle - it may require you collect more than 1 type of gems
-convert to talisman requires gold bar also - used in the witch hut to access better voodoo - has a value that can be used up
it may require you collect more than 1 type of gems

similar to goods, gemstone can only be sold in a port were they are not found

if you win gemstones and wish to sell them they must be loaded as cargo and transported to the other port

extra risk during transport - shipment is flagged as gem shipment on the gossip pages

you can transport gems on your own or hire a smuggler

a tab is created on the left hand side to handle gemstone related activity

how to get gemstones - npc quest - you must find and defeat a series of targets the final target is a treasure fleet carrying gems
- strength of target and amount of gems stones plunder increases with players fleet size as does difficulty
- perhaps you may get them at random chance in normal npc battle also
-- or you can steal them pvp from another player during shipment
-- potential for a not yet created voodoo card to steal gems also -

missions are port specific - your prize is the gem stones that are in the specific for the port where you do battle with the treasure fleet

you must then get your gemstone to a different port to sell them

since it shows on the gossip page and you may be plundered for your gemstone cargo - it is high risk

Smuggler exchange
you need to move your gemstones - you can take them yourself or you can hire a smuggler

smuggler operate similar to bounties

you post the gems you wish to transport and what you are willing to pay

a smuggler must post a bond - the value of the gems
if the smuggler loses the gems the bond is tranferred to the gem shipper

if they successfully deliver your gems they get the fee

if gems are stolen in route they become the property of the raider

however the raiders fleet then show the flag showing they are carrying gemstones

If this is possible to implement - I have an idea for a grace period before shipments show on gossip page

Tech upgrade in hideout academy- smuggler tech - each upgrade yields and extra .15 second grace period before flag (or maybe fleet )shows on gossip page

Pirate advantage - pirates get a starting 5 minute grace period on the gossip page - why - because pirates be sneaky

Comments, suggestions, ect - all welcome

We shall just put it to different rating, as in A,B,C,D and E, A being the best where 1 crate can be worth around 10 mill and E being the worst or the most useless or just plain decor at a worth of 500gc per crate. A few suggestion on their uses, as being used to make legendary voodoo or upgrade buildings at vital points of level(5, 10, 15, 20)(From me).

And about 3 suggestion on how to find it, gem mine(From me)(A lot of people disagree with me), npc treasure hunt, npc fleets. Npc fleets find suggestion was most supported by pirates.

Ways of storing, can only have 5 in hand and others must be buried(Like gc)(Most supported by pirates), like gold bars, where you transport them from warehouse to warehouse.

My suggestion on transporting it is that 1 gem takes 10 cargo space of a ship.

i my suggestion a gemstone are worth the same, but you may need to collect more than one type to create an amulet or talsiman.
the only other purpose for variation is so you need to transport them.

1 gem = ten cargo spaces - thats a big stone mate.

i also disagree with the Gem Mine

overall I think gems should be incorperated into the game, you have some good suggestions as do a lot of others that posted, of coarse I like my own ideas the best ;)
