you get the ship when the other person cant pay the bounty for it, giving you the ship.

Indeed, there are these 2 methods with the capture method being the most prominent. With voodoo cards you will be able to gold-lock your opponent, capture then all his ships one by one and then kill him with the death curse voodoo.
