Yeah, that's definitely more true with you guys. Democrats and Republicans cannot agree on practically anything. There is no real bipartisan support for many things I think because if one party comes up with a good idea the other party rejects it simply because it was an idea from the other party. I reckon your parties need to be more like Australian parties. Disagree on many things but agree on broad strokes policies like defense, Russia invaded Ukraine (not the other way around lol) and other such things.

Lachlan your example of aluminum is based on something other than facts.

The aluminum sector comprises three segments:

The upstream sector, which includes the mining of bauxite, the refining of bauxite into alumina (aluminum oxide), and the smelting of alumina to yield primary aluminum. The molten aluminum is cast into ingots, billets, or slabs, collectively referred to as unwrought aluminum.

Secondary aluminum is derived from recycled scrap metal. Secondary production involves smelting both old scrap recovered from finished products, such as cans and auto parts, and new scrap, material left over from processing aluminum into consumer or industrial products. Similar to primary aluminum, secondary aluminum typically is cast into unwrought shapes.

The downstream sector uses primary or secondary aluminum to make aluminum products, which may then be used in the manufacture of motor vehicles, construction materials, consumer durables, and other products.

We have been the world's leading aluminum manufacturer several times. Currently, I would guess we are 5th to 8th.
Why?
Factories moving outside the U.S.
To pay cheaper labor and have fewer restrictions on the manufacturing process

Tariifs are on other nations and means with that extra tax they cannot compete with our U.S. market of manufacturers of aluminum.

They have 3 options
take a loss and enrich us by paying the tariff
build factories in the us and enrich us with employment
or become irrelevant and not sell in our economy

Either way we will gain, this is true of almost all facets of industry excluding minerals we don't mine due to their rarity or absence in our nation.

Afterthought... we also say aluminum the correct way .. you fookers trip all over the word :D :D :D

A billionaire ceo in a company doesn't make or write the laws. But a corrupt politician who can be bribed by him does. Get rid of corruption ins politics, and you solve the majority of problems. But that's not exactly an easy thing to do.

Corruption is exactly the reason things never change. The rich stay in power. Corruption is part of the class divide issue, so you're right. As for your question, I'm not pro any unethical labor, no matter where it is. I don't think limiting ourselves to our own supply is a good idea though in case of economic collapse or even just recession it's always a good idea to have many potential sources to get things from. Should those sources be held to the same labor standards we hold our own workers to? Absolutely. Should we have higher standards of labor for ourselves? Absolutely

I don't see this supposed research. I see bullshit you are unwilling to explain. Heck Dman explained his viewpoint on gas an oil. Why can't you do the same? It's not that hard.

All of these companies you're talking about will migrate to the most profitable situation... Hence the tariffs

That should be pretty simple I feel like anyway

I think if our nation could be self sufficient which I think it can be for most things, it should. The US is large enough and has enough resources that we should be able to produce most things without relying on trade partners. Relations change. If we rely on another nation for something important, and they end up turning hostile for one reason or another, we'd be in trouble while we shift to replace what they provided us.

Take Canada for example. Some of our electricity comes from Canada. What happens if Canada turns hostile and shuts if off? Sure we may be allies now, and have been for some time, but again, things change. We had a war with them in 1812. We were once good friends with Russia. We were once enemies with the UK. A hundred years from now, will Canada still be our friend? No one could answer that with certainty.

Trade should be with things that are not vital. Anything that is vital and of importance that we can do here, we should.

On the Ukraine topic, I say we should let them handle it themselves. They are one of the most corrupt governments out there, and we've already given them so much, for nothing in return. I also don't care for how Zelensky acted in his meeting with Trump and Vance. When you're going to someone to ask for something, you should be polite, humble and thankful. Not muttering swears in a foreign language, rolling your eyes and having your arms crossed like a kid in time out.

Oh okay lol I get it lol. I got lost lol. But do we really want Canada? Canadians are so “nice”. And you know what they say about “ nice”. They turn out to be bad news. For example a certain Canadian tossed a few cards on me.
